They have a really cool playlist called Gojira Influences. If you can’t find it I’ll post the artists/tracks.

Discussion: let's revisit our favorite releases from last year. What were they? Would you change anything about them? is there something you would replace? I'll start.

    Here were mine last year:

    1. Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
    2. The Ominous Circle - Appalling Ascension
    3. Extremity - Extremely Dead
    4. Necrot - Blood Offerings
    5. Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon
    6. Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper
    7. Elder - Reflections of a Floating World
    8. Hellripper - Coagulating Darkness
    9. Darkest Hour - Godless Prophets & Migrant Flora
    10. Urn - The Burning

If I had to do it again, not too much would change. Power Trip would still stay at #1. That album gets me hype all the time.

The Ominous Circle might move down a few spots, but that was the first album of 2018 I truly enjoyed and I am currently in love with their brand of death/black metal.

Extremity and Necrot would probably swap places, as I've been listening to Blood Offerings a lot lately after purchasing the CD.

I haven't been back to Artificial Brain in some time.

I just listened to Mirror Reaper again yesterday for the first time in a while. It is honestly an endeavor, but a perfect record for when I am in the mood. That mood is pretty rare, however.

Elder is still great. Haven't been back to it though.

Hellripper would definitely move up, maybe all the way to #5. That brand of black/thrash is my jam right now and I can't wait to see what he does next.

As for the last two, I haven't listened to either of them in some time. I have the Darkest Hour CD in my car and it is still way better than their previous album. Urn's album was never anything super special but it was a fun album. I never purchased it so I only listen to it on bandcamp (they aren't on Spotify).

I think there are several albums from 2017 that I didn't spend enough time with. Pyrrhon, Tchornobog, Devouring Star, Chaos Moon, and Aosoth to name a few. It was an absolutely insane year for death metal, but I still only had 2 pure DM albums on my list. I think I got overwhelmed to be honest, and I just chose the two that I remembered the most. This year continues to build on that pattern, and I'm already drowning in quality DM releases.

I'm helping Jason out with the spotlight feature later this week and wrote about Mammoth Grinder and Hooded Menace, trying to spread the gospel of metal amongst the normies

I hope it helps. Extreme metal isn’t the most “accessible” thing.

One of the thoughts I've had about this site is that it long has been devoid of quality metal content. Thanks for filling that void.

A lot of people around here like a couple extreme metal albums here and there but don't know where to dive in to explore more stuff, I used to help a lotttt of people find access points to the genre so hopefully people who read my blurbs will check them out and see I name drop power trip and check them out and then check out other bands based on that and so on

If I still wrote regularly I would be going hard. Sadly I don't have the time or desire to write as much as I used to but I may see if I can't pop up every couple months or so highlighting some metal

Maryland Deathfest posted their schedule yesterday, and I'm pissed about a few of the conflicts. Sinister/Integrity/Dead Infection/Blood Incantation, Bloodbath/Eyehategod, Dodheimsgard/Gasp, The Ruins of Beverast/Cripple Bastards, Pure Hiss/Suffering Hour, and Darkspace/Wormrot at least have some overlap and I'm gonna have to figure out my personal itinerary...though having an abundance of quality loud tunes is the true definition of a first world problem so I won't complain at all beyond this post.

There are admittedly much fewer bands at this that I'd prefer to see. Most tickets sold out pretty fast and it was announced during a time when we were trying to be frugal. I'm gonna take another look because I think they announced more tickets recently.

doesnt look like im gonna be able to afford the power trip show next week

lack of money has completely fucked up my chances to see so many great shows in the last year. but its nice living in philly knowing 90% of bands that come through here will be back sooner rather than later so i'll always have a chance. and after a couple more months i'll be caught up on my debts and bills and start having more money to toss around for shows

honestly going to shows can be costly, especially in a big city that is a stop on every tour

Hooded Menace should be a good intro to anyone wanting to test the waters of metal. Such a complete album.

Ooooh Visigoth might be a good one too, for people who aren't into harsh vocals

It would be cool if we could do a “7 Degrees of...”
Start here with this pretty accessible band and the goal is to get someone to appreciate (obscure artist x) by going through a few bands.

yeah i dig that. how would we connect them though? shared members seems too limited and “similar artists” is kind of subjective. tour mates?

  21. Nate_Johnson

    CCRN, MSN Prestigious

I think tour mates would be an interesting way to spin it.

Label mates? I know some labels span a lot of styles but a lot are pretty niche and it could also help branch off from genre to genre
