It’s for base running. Hand protection when sliding back to first when the pitcher tries to pick you off or when you steal a bag. Helps prevent fingers from getting jammed or mangled from a hard tag/cleat

 

Is that the sliding glove with rods in it to avoid injury?

 

I’m not entirely aware of the structure of it but I imagine it’s made to be pretty sturdy if enough players are going to them to aid their running game.

I actually find it strange that he bats with it in his back pocket considering how many players I see get it from the first base coach once they reach base safely. Could be a good luck charm. I’m not sure of how many others keep it with them during an at bat.

 

It looked like he had it in the outfield too just a minute ago. It is pretty interesting all the stuff and where players keep / put on things these days. Pads and shields and different gloves.
