I can't believe people aren't more excited for the book adaptation of the upcoming WDNTW Broadway show.

I personally love untitled because it felt like it was about more than just girls or parents or whatever blink's previous records were about. That doesn't automatically make it better than any other record, but for me, it was a great segway from pop punk to more mature, darker themes in music and art. It explored isolation, loneliness, depression, death, and also sex, romance, passion, angst, and longing. Not only were the themes different and more interesting, the aesthetic was too. The sonic range was impressive, I loved that a song like "I Miss You" could exist on an album with "Go". "Feeling This" could exist with "Stockholm Syndrome" and it made sense. "Always" and "All of This" could feel like entries in the same story. Again, this doesn't mean you have to like it more than any other blink record, but that exploration and pushing of themselves spoke to me in a profound way when I was 12-13. There's nothing wrong with a song like "Wendy Clear" or "Everytime I Look For You". I adore those songs. But once the band showed they were capable of more, of something much more musically interesting than pop punk riffs and catchy choruses, but also musical experimentation and challenges like "the Fallen Interlude", which I didn't like when I was 12-13 but love now, it's much more of a statement than any of their previous records. I get why people prefer Dude Ranch or Enema of the State. But I don't like seeing dismissiveness of this record because fans for some weird reason assume people only like it because it was different, and not that blink-182 actually did interesting, cool stuff.

I love American Idiot too, and have long felt that I like blink-182 and Green Day more than I actually like the genre of pop punk, because while I enjoy the Starting Line and Yellowcard, the untitled record and American Idiot felt like such huge statements. Like bands from one pretty stagnant, simple genre could make something that pushed their music forward into territory most other pop punk bands either actively resist or have no interest in. So once those records dropped, no other pop punk bands lived up to it. American Idiot and the untitled record might have ironically pushed me out of pop punk, because they were such huge, ambitious records, I wanted to hear bands that were actively challenging or refining or pushing themselves and their music. It feels like it's rare I get that from other pop punk bands, and I found it more in Death Cab for Cutie, Brand New, Kanye West, Radiohead, etc.

None of this is to say that you have to like ambitious or diverse albums more than any other type of record. But I hope there can be more consideration given towards different perspectives. This thread tends to go in circular discussions though, and people do seem to get really defensive or snipey about things, set in their idea that Enema is the best blink album or blink is better than Green Day or that untitled is leagues better than the rest of the blink discography or this is better than that or whatever and whatever. It makes this thread an unpleasant place to try and talk about stuff, and that's a shame because I love blink-182 and they changed my life and I want an environment where ideas about them and their history and their future can bounce off each other and grow and evolve, rather than just sit and stagnate and turn into random rankings every three pages. We can do better. Talk about things. Don't just say something empty like "this record is better than this one" or "you're wrong".

or not, whatever, I'm a dork.

Untitled was the first blink album that I listened to and that was in mid-2006. So, that's probably why I don't like their other albums as much.

The posted I quoted said "Green Day sucks" without any explanation or elaboration. Sure, I was poking fun at it, but that part of the post was highly unhelpful to begin with.
