A couple listens through now, the lyrics are not good. Spencer's screams sound great though.

Spencer also said they used some of the profit from the Rebirth tour to buy out the remaining 1 LP they owed to Tooth and Nail on their contract.

someone definitely said this before, but Hold your breath has gotta be the first time theyve had a song focus around a major. Can't think of another one.

Which is part of the writing process. They always recorded their parts, too. If that's changed then they're basically touring members at best now.

The impression I got from their previous docs is that Grant and James were barely active in the songwriting process in the first place. I’m pretty sure Tim wrote the lion’s share of the guitar and bass parts before and the major difference here is that he performed them all instead of them. The four core songwriters have remained the same but it seems like more sacrifices were made on behalf of everyone to get the final product. Before, if even one person didn’t like a part, it would be scrapped entirely, and with 6 heads involved I can only imagine how exhausting that process must be and how it led to heightened tensions within the entire band. Here, instead of saying “this isn’t Underoath enough”, that member would suck it up and add to it and make it “Underoath enough.” And apparently Grant and James still had somewhat of a say; they were sent in-progress songs and were very honest about their feelings on them and that seemed to influence how the four that were writing would change or direct the songs, or whether they’d be scrapped entirely.

It’s dishonest to say that it was merely a Spencer and Aaron record and that they were overbearing in the writing process. If anything, that criticism could have been lobbed at Tim on their older material.

Well now I know why I hate Rapture and Wake Me so much, they're both co-written by Johnny Andrews, who writes for a lot of bands I really don't like.

And to add to that, Tim specifically states that picking Squire was the right choice & that Squire knew the most about their previous works, and was even going into detail about parts he loved from their albums within their discography

yeah, as much talk as there’s been about tim this record (i’ve been doing it about as much as anyone), you can barely hear him throughout the record

As someone suggested give me Tim’s version of this record and it’s probably 10x better

We reach for the longest shadow

Well we have The Almost and Sleepwave, so we should've know an Underoath record written by Aaron and Spencer wasn't going to be great.

  21. *whispers* Most of all your favorite Underoath albums were written primarily by Aaron and Spencer too.

Wake Me has a real 90s vibe and I dig that. I actually dig the whole record tbh. But Underoath was always just a band I listened to. They were never "important" in my life, so the change in sound or it not topping the other records doesn't really mean anything to me. It's a different sounding Underoath record and works for me. Also, Bloodlust sounds like Underoath listened to a lot of Kid A during the writing process.

I found this to be pretty boring on my first listen if I had to be honest. Like it’s not a bad record but it does little for me.
