“Quarterbacks who threw more interceptions than Marcus Mariota last season: 1.

Quarterbacks who threw more interceptable passes than Mariota last season: 26.

Mariota’s 2017 season was unlike any from recent times. He threw 16 interceptions but only 14 interceptable passes. How was that possible? An incredible 13 of his 14 interceptable passes were caught, 92.9 percent, the highest rate in the league by a large distance. On top of that, he had three interceptions that weren’t his fault, non-quarterback interceptions which aren’t included in the interceptable pass total.

Compare Mariota’s season to a quarterback close to the league average. An Andy Dalton for example. Dalton had 10 of his 32 interceptable passes caught. Russell Wilson had exactly the same numbers. Kirk Cousins threw 15 more interceptable passes than Mariota but had four fewer caught. If Mariota was as lucky as Derek Carr with with his turnovers last year, he’d have only thrown five all season long.”

Mariota doesn't throw interceptable balls because he throws underneath all game. Whenever he tries to challenge the defense deep it's typically a lame duck throw that could be caught by children in a playground, so it makes sense a high ratio of his pass deflections become picks.

Best thing I'll give him is he's good at leading slant and in routes, receivers don't have to break stride so they can create YAC. You can point to Brady and Brees as QBs who do that a lot and dont mind throwing underneath 70% of the time, if that's what's available... but that's a myopic way of looking at the incredibly diverse quarterback position. You'd be pointing out one skill out of several others Mariota lacks.

He's as fast as advertised, but really how special is that in the modern NFL? Blake Bortles literally has better rushing statistics despite running almost a full half second slower 40', and Tyrod Taylor, who is just as fast and just as good at avoiding turnovers, has proven unable to parlay that into being a franchise quarterback.

In terms of decision making, planning ahead, anticipating receiver separation, arc, velocity, touch... if a receiver is even a little bit covered Mariota won't make a confident precise throw. He'll wait for a totally open guy and sometimes that's too late. His style of passing expects too much of the scheme to create easy passing lanes for him. That just doesn't happen on a weekly basis in the NFL, not even if you play for the Eagles.

Mariota is lucky to have Dick LeBeau coaching a defense that can keep him afloat in games. He's also lucky to have one of the best offensive lines in football and a gameplan dedicated to running the ball. Because even throughout his college career he's never been a QB who plays well from behind, he can only keep pace while his team is ahead, and that is what we call a "game manager".

(I will admit the playoff game against Kansas City is the one game that counters all this. We'll see if he plays like that more often next year.)

Clowney was a #1 overall. Inflates his value

I was saying yesterday I expect to have to pay Yannick 18 or 19 AAV

The one thing Rick Smith was really good at was contract extensions so I'm curious to see how Gaine does with extending both Clowney and Mercilus in one offseason

    The rivalry is back on

If you don’t draft good players, you don’t have to worry about giving them a big second contract

  23. xbrokendownx

    Lets Go. Prestigious

since 2010, the only players drafted by the Dolphins to get 2nd contracts are:

    Reshad Jones (Pro Bowler)
    Koa Misi (lol)
    Mike Pouncey
    Ryan Tannehill
    Walt Aikens (Special teamer/backup)

    thats it.

Or, you could just draft good players and then sign bad players from other teams.
