We reach for the longest shadow

Matt's fakeout of "so bury me---" is awesome.

  2. Funeral doesn't blow me away like it used to but I still love the medley because I just generally am a big fan of when bands do that. Recurring themes/motifs/melody lines/lyrics - these are all extremely my shit and TWY in general are really very good at it.

Same. Coheed is my favorite band and they do this a lot (or used to) so I've always been a big fan of that type of thing.

I like the medley but I wouldn’t want them to do it again. The first three minutes of Funeral do nothing for me

  5. plus I mean, the way it builds back up into the TWO BLACKBIRDS ON A HIGHWAY SIIIIIGN part is fucking phenomenal still

Yeah I think it's awkward song writing and it plagues TGG. I'm not a fan of the "themes" of that album either. It's all seems really forced as you say.

The ending of that song is just great though, I love it.

  7. My favorite parts of funeral are the second verse (“I’ll blame the way that i was brought up...”) and the end (“Two blackbirds...” to the end)

I would disagree that it plagues tgg - I think it had dan’s best lyrics to that point (I think he’s improved markedly every album), but I agree with most of the rest

    Meet me in Montauk

A bit late to the party for listening this, but man - Raining In Kyoto hit me like a ton of bricks.

A month and a half ago I caught word that my aunty in Australia was being moved to palliative care. My wife and I came to the decision that we should try to go see her even if she passes before we got there. We booked our trip, but she passed before we got there in the two weeks. My wife got to meet my family and all, and I'm glad I was at the funeral. It really helped me grieve.

So I can't imagine being in Soupy's place. Dealing with the grief and guilt. I can't imagine how tough that would be.

    If you don't, don't

Holding off listening to this until Friday when my vinyl and book set arrive. Pretty stoked to do so based on the positive reaction so far!

For those who have listened - are there any lyrics that reference songs from previous albums?

  12. Have decided, I'm gonna grab a Kontraband pre-order package with a shirt and only pick up the bookset if I see it at the Dublin show or can find one on Discogs for a price close to retail.

Honestly I might also go for the VIP upgrade, I still haven't done that and they're still available...

I love the part on Flowers when it sounds like it’s going to build up for s second and just slows down. Also the drums on that song are really cool.

  14. Maybe this has been posted here already but this is a really cool write up on the event page for my date of this tour (NYC, May 5th).

"The Wonder Years are a band & they are a band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & they came to life in 2005 & they write songs & those songs are sometimes about people they love & those songs are sometimes about people you might have loved & those songs are sometimes about a city that could be the city you live in or a neighborhood that feels like it could be your neighborhood & they put those songs on albums & they put those songs on The Upsides in 2010 & they put those songs on Suburbia I've Given You All and Now I'm Nothing in 2011 & on The Greatest Generation in 2013 & on No Closer to Heaven in 2015 & those albums were loved by critics & even more loved by fans & their shows are awash with a genuine emotional energy that only they can pull out of a room & The Wonder Years are a band made up of old friends & they play rock & roll music & they play it like they mean it & they have played it in a lot of places & in front of a lot of people & they have played it in dive bars & arenas & outside with the whole sky bowing & they have played it on five continents & they have played it in thirty countries & they are still counting & Sister Cities is their new album & it is an album about how all of our distance might not be so wide after all & it was written with the world on fire & all of the songs sound like they are trying to build you a bridge from somewhere bad to somewhere better & The Wonder Years are a band & they are also bridge builders."

    It's all hell.

The way Dan delivers the "I'm gonna marry you underneath driftwood from Crescent City" line in Flowers makes me want to fall in love with everyone and everything all at once.

Got my pre-order CD package from MerchNow today. Even though I've already listened several times, it feels great to finally have the actual album in my hands.

The passport book is pretty cool, too.

3/4s of the way through this record and I can’t stand how melodramatic it sounds.

Will read the lyrics when they’re available.

If you're not going into a wonder years album prepared for melodrama you're doing it wrong

It’s sad. I want to like this album. I wanted to like the last album. I think it’s just hitting me at the wrong time.

Plenty of popular records never hit me at all.
All you can do is go back at a few different times to see if it clicks.
Hopefully this one creeps in for you.
