I just think he can be neutralized with press-man. He is a good enough player, but I would not have traded a 1st round pick on top of paying big $$ to him liek the Rams will have to. They should have just paid Watkins

It's too bad they suck at evaluating talent from every other program.

Cooks is a better NFL wideout than Watkins though.

If you put Cooks in the slot off the football, the press goes away. And if he beats your press (even if it's just once), it's a game changing play. He's a mismatch nightmare if you play your cards right.

Trading a first for a former first rounder that's lived up to his draft position is a smart move...especially during a year where the draft class really doesn't have too many premier wideout prospects. There's some depth in that position group, but no special players.

This is why they had to do it. Goff, Gurley, Donald, Joyner, Whitworth...this team basically cant possibly look like it does by 2020, if not 2019.

Not enough teams go all in to win a Super Bowl; and those that do either have it work out great (Denver) or get positioned for the rebuild like they need (Giants).

Also assuming they don’t get another big WR, is Edelman the wr1 in NE? Hogan?

Does New England* ever really have a true #1 though? They'll just spread the ball around to WRs, TEs, and RBs.

Unless they trade for someone or end up with Calvin Ridley/Courtland Sutton/DJ Moore, they are going to have a undermatched group of wideouts. I don't see a rookie doing much in that offense early on either.

I wouldn't be surprised if both of those picks are O-lineman. Not a lot of talent in this class, but NE drastically needs some new guys in there.

Of their Super Bowl Team this year

    Solder
    Hightower
    Butler
    Trey Flowers
    Gronkowski
    Thuney
    Andrews
    Mason
    Malcolm Brown

Are all relatively recent picks not from Rutgers. They do just fine...

They have good guards and that's where the talent is in this class. They may try to upgrade their center (James Daniels, maybe). Kolton Miller is very similar to Nate Solder, so he could be a target for them.

As a Rutgers fan/student, it pains me greatly to see so many on NE. Especially after the Browns traded Jason McCourty. Sigh.

If that is the benchmark you set than every single team in the NFL but the Eagles suck at evaluating talent

Also completely agree on Kolton being a target.

I like how the two teams I support don't even draft until the 3rd round

Part that'd worry me if I was a Rams fan would be the 2nd for Watkins who was gone in FA. But even then, they are trading their picks for young, proven guys by and large. Cooks, Watkins, Peters, etc are all <26 and on rookie deals when they traded for them.

If you could draft 1st-5th and walk away with Cooks, Peters, and Talib, youd be pretty happy.

Who knows. All they do is make smart decisions.

I think trading Jimmy G was a mistake, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft and develop another one by the time Brady's light goes out

This isn't true at all. Not even close really haha. They make smart decisions based on their coach and QB. Take them out and they have what, Hightower and McCourty?

  22. It’ll only look like a smart move because Brady is good enough to make trading Cooks away not matter.

Also, Cooks is a really good receiver and I think he’s worth a late-first rounder. Not saying picks don’t matter but I don’t value them quite as much as most others do. GMs miss on picks so often that moving one for a young but already proven player isn’t a bad move.

Cooks has reached 1,000 yards in 3 of his 4 seasons. The only time he didn’t get there was his rookie year when he missed the second half of the season. He reached the milestone last year on a Patriots team that spread the ball around probably more than any other team. He’s also increased his yards per reception every year. He’s absolutely a safer option than any WR, or any other player at another position, that’d be available at their pick. And they have the money to give him a new deal. He’s better than Watkins and I bet they’ll sign him for less than Watkins did in KC.

And long-term, I don’t think the Rams are in trouble. They signed Suh to a one-year deal. Talib’s cap hit actually goes down in the last year of the deal (they only have him for two years). Those two players allow them to win now but do nothing to hinder resigning the young core. They can give new contracts to Cooks and Donald this season while waiting a couple more years to reward Peters and Goff. It shouldn’t be hard to make it work. It’ll only get tricky if/when Goff gets his mega-QB deal.

The only player that’s hard to gauge is Gurley. He’s obviously amazing but teams don’t sign RBs to huge deals anymore. It’ll be interesting to see what he gets.

How many UFAs did the Rams sign? I feel like most of their acquisitions have been trades so they could be in line for a nice comp pick next year for that fat deal Watkins got

Seems like Brady has convinced us all he’ll be good next season, but I’m still not convinced until I see it. I’ll never forget how the wheels just came off for Peyton. He looked good until he didn’t, and then he reaaaaaally didn’t look good.

  25. They signed Suh. But I don’t know if it only being a one-year deal factors into the whole process.
