you are right, and it's all subjective/personal. i just don't like it :crylaugh:

if I had to say why, I think it's because I love this band and seeing songs compared to bands I don't like as much maybe I'm being defensive (for no reason as I know it's not a negative comparison).

I think I'm up to seven listens through now and it just gets better and better. I like Pyramids of Salt a lot better in the context of the album, sounds so good after Kyoto. I'm not usually someone who cares much about the order of the tracks but this just works for me.

When the Blue Finally Came is the only track that I'm not that keen on right now. I like the verses of the Ghosts of Right Now, but don't think the chorus is that strong.

Agreed 100%. Dan might be one of the few lyricists whose work I enjoy reading as much as a novelist's. I'm excited to have another listen with the booklet.

yall heard the poems he was reading out at the pop-up show before a few songs? The one about him and his dad jumping on the bed he read out before Pyramids gives me the chills.

Alright, I have the CD and am going in for my first listen. I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready for this, but here we go.

So, after the first listen I think it's really good. Pretty comfortable already saying that it will become at least my second favorite album of their. Whether or not it moves up to number one depends on if it hits as hard emotionally as NCTH did, which, on my first time listening, it really didn't until the last track. But I definitely think that will change with time (I didn't fully connect with NCTH at first either).

Some early favorites are Raining In Kyoto, Pyramids of Salt, We Look Like Lightning, and the last song. There's nothing really that I dislike although Heaven's Gate is probably my least favorite right now (the outro of Heaven's Gate is great, though)

Took me a fair while longer than the rest of y'all but I'm finally here with this album. I forgot that the only TWY album that I didn't have to have grow on me was TGG hah

Sister Cities is a good song that's unfortunately sandwiched between two of the best songs on the record which makes it seem worse than it is

Kyoto feels a bit like a 'sequel' to Dismantling Summer, likewise Flowers Where Your Face Should Be to You in January.

In the latter part of Heaven's Gate I get vibes from the last parts of I Don't Like Who I Was then and A Song for Ernest Hemingway.

Edit - Also Ocean Grew Hands to Hold Me sounds like the logical next step as a closer after And Now I'm Nothing and I Just Want To Sell Out My Funeral (ignoring the medley part - as fun as that is, would love to hear that song with just the first half and final verse, would be a great track. Have thought when they play Funeral live that it's almost a bit of a waste as we've heard all those other songs in it already.)

Love the way the music kicks in on the last word too. I miss the OCEAN

  21. I think someone got their Target version early, it'll probably be floating around this weekend. (Though if NCTH is anything to go by it'll be added to the Bandcamp version at some point like those Target bonus tracks were.)

Also a new interview is live on Gold Flake Paint here: In-depth: Universal Truth - A Conversation with The Wonder Years (not mine, I fucking wish obviously, but I'm passing this along if anyone fancies a read!)

I don’t think he was talking favorably about The members of BN, but I don’t think it’s that far off to compare this album to Science Fiction. I actually picked up some BN vibes myself and saw this comment on reddit about SC that I found would be relatable to some “This album is very Brand New sounding so far, except I don't feel filthy after listening to it.”
