TOCS has nostalgia otherwise I'd say they're about equal but I don't see this being nostalgic for me in ten years but who knows

 

Interesting, I mean minus the nostalgia I really don't see any merit in placing an album as weak as TOCS over this.

 

Yeah everything I have heard so far kinda blows TOCS out of the water for me. I still expect TOCS will solidly be my least favorite Underoath album after this no matter how it ranks.

 

Man I'm really beating myself up at this point for holding out until Friday haha. Feels like I'm one of the few people here who hasn't heard it yet.

 

There is something joyous in knowing you are listening to it with thousands of other people, though. I wasn't a fan of the band before, so it wasn't like I was waiting for something. I hope you like it, though. It is a ton of fun.

 

The GOOOODDD ERASE ME I DON'T DESERVE THE LIFE YOU GIVE part has been stuck in my head all day.

I'm not going to lie, it is very weird reading all these varying opinions though.

 

Bloodlust is the one that’s grown on me the most since I first heard this. Hook could still be better but it is quite catchy.

 

I mean I think this album is just as weak as TOCS. I don't particularly like TOCS but there's two songs I like.

 

I like TOCS a lot more. That album is kind of fun to listen to, this isn't.

The only songs I like on TOCS are It's Dangerous Business and maybe Down Set Go. Been years since I've listened to it

 

100%, I still love that album.

 

First listen reaction to every song was "Okay, what is this?" On my second listen, and every reaction is changing to "Okay, I think I like this". Hoping that development continues.

 

Rapture is currently number 40 on mainstream rock charts, that's the highest they've ever charted there. I guess the success they wanted with those more straightforward rock songs might be paying off

 

I think I'd like the closer on here a lot more if Aaron Marsh sang it.

 

if people are saying that this is better than TOCS, i should definitely listen to this one. TOCS is by far my favorite Underoath album though, so.... haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate hate.

 

I'm waiting until Friday morning when I pick it up at Target for the 2 bonus tracks!

It has been interesting to read this thread the last few weeks. It went from super hype, to everyone shitting on it, to back again to praise and the album isn't even officially out yet lol.

 

Well I think they're saying that every UO record after TOCS is better.

My opinion:

I think this record is obviously more mature/interesting. But I love every song on TOCS, it has the same amount if not fewer cheesy lyrics, and it was culturally relevant and helped start a revolution of emo/screamo music being popular in the mainstream world. I'm really into about 8/11 songs on Erase Me and I doubt this will do anything impact the music scene as a whole. So I still like TOCS better and think it's a more important record. DTGL is probably the best balance of cultural importance and musical quality, LITSOS is my personal favorite, a clear growth from DTGL, and Disambiguation has the most maturity/musical integrity, but easily the least impact. Erase Me is definitely the biggest impact that UO has made in a while (mostly due to the return of the band), but I don't see this record being revered the same way in 10 (or even 5) years.

I like that it seems like they really made an album they wanted to make, and didn't let preconceived notions about what a reunion would sound like dictate what they ended up releasing.

 

This album will win them sooooo many new fans; waaaay more accessible than previous albums. So yeah it's their "mainstream" album; I have no problem with it being a gateway album for new fans to discover their previous material. Should help the band become more sustainable than it's ever been

 

Would love to know if any bigger publications plan on reviewing this, because most of the smaller publications have been giving this album 5/5, or 8/10-10/10's

i like "rapture" and "on my teeth" a lot more in context.

 

I get that some people don't like TOCS - it's not near the top of my list either - but I'm struggling to think of a song on this that compares with the best stuff on that.
