Going through this with the lyrics now, but already I'm certain this is my favourite release of theirs. Waaaaaaaay better than NCTH, which had some brilliant standout songs but was hideously inconsistent, and probably even TGG which never clicked with me all the way through as it did for everyone else. Raining in Kyoto as an opener is phenomenal, and even though there are so many stand out songs, have to say Flowers is basically the perfect Wonder Years song for me. Overall it's a huge step up, cannot wait to shout the chorus to Pyramids in a week or so.

  2. What do we reckon then, thread, is this streaming tomorrow?

Yeah NCTH is not good. The only songs I particularly care for are Cardinals, Patsy Cline, Cigs & Saints, and Stained Glass Ceilings. Everything else is either mediocre or bad

I concur. NCTH is not a good album. I like this album but I don't think it's as good as TGG

Saw a TWY billboard on 95 today. Pretty cool

  7. Probably their weakest record out of the four (Sister Cities doesn't count as it's not out yet) but we got Slow Dancing with San Andreas out of it and that didn't make the cut for the record somehow, so...

I just don't see where the disconnect between NCTH and the rest of their discog is for folks.

Production nonwithstanding of course, I enjoy it only slightly less than TGG which is (was?) my favorite.

NCTH is okay. It’s better than The Upsides but certainly weaker than the next two. This may end up becoming my favorite TWY record, but I really love TGG.

    I think the songs aren't good ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also don't like TGG. Two boring albums.

Yeah but you didn't enjoy TGG so I get YOU not liking it.

I dunno, I'm just not seeing where this drastic change in songwriting is outside of maybe not enjoying pop-punk or production qualms. NCTH wasn't a regression and as previously mentioned a lot of SC feels like a refinement as well as a more confident step forward from that record.

It's not a big deal but something that intrigues me, opinions are opinion after all.

To be honest, I'm kinda glad that other people feel the same as I do about NCTH. Kinda felt weird saying that TWY are my favourite band, but not being able to make it all the way through one of their records.

So excited for a return to form though. NCTH is most definitely an outlier, everything else this band/ its members touch is gold for me. TGG might be in my top 3 favourite records, and The Upsides is close too.

Haven't enjoyed an ending run of three songs as much as this since Manchester Orchestra's last record. Hard to call now but may even prefer it to Funeral as a way to close an album.

TGG is passable but there were parts I hated and didn't show any growth that I wanted it too. I also think the themes of that album were terrible. But the actual songs are OK, just not what I want to listen to when I could listen to Suburbia which I think is far superior.

I genuinely think NCTH is a really bad album. I think the songs are a weird middle ground between TWY and what they wanted to be. They pulled their punches and ended up writing an uninspiring and subpar album. It's like they wanted to grow out of the sound they were in but we're too scared to actually do that. Teething problems, it seems.

That's totally fair, what they did do that was new was enough to satisfy me. But I get wanting more especially with cigs and saints as the lead single.

I thought it was some of Dan's strongest lyrical work too, which is why I'm such a big TWY fan as it is.

SC definitely feels like everything has come together and meshed well. A culmination.

I like NCTH a loooooot more than I used to. I probably listen to it nowadays more than Subrubia, and Upsides isn't good; I never liked that or GSOI. This is definitely their best release and such an awesome record

  24. FTFY ;) C&S was the second single.

@smowashere Streaming tomorrow on one of my days off? LIT. Can't wait to spend most of the day listening to this tbh.
