Played through Far Cry 5. Never planned on buying it, but I got my hands on a free copy. So, lucky me.

This game is a perfect example of Ubisoft never being able to fully commit to their vision. A lot has been made about how FC5 fails at its politics. The problem is that Ubisoft tries its hardest to avoid the politics, not that they fail at them. And it's not just they avoid them at all costs, it's that the story they tell can't properly be told without an acknowledgement or confrontation of those politics. This game is hollow. But it's hollow the same way the previous 4 games(FC3, BD, FC4, Primal) have been. They want to please everyone, so the narrative loses its power. Which is a shame, because it has such a great opening and the villains themselves are interesting enough as characters. But here we are again, another Far Cry game that refuses to commit so as not to be offensive.

It's not just the story either. The mechanics have some issues. I appreciated the removal of the minimap. Adding that to the franchise was an absolutely terrible idea to begin with and it took them six years to realize it. But there's still too much going on in the UI regardless. Tagging enemies is another one of Ubisoft's terrible ideas for this franchise that has stuck around for this installment. It takes all the tension out of combat, being able to see enemies through walls. It's a very gamey element that needs to go.

Then there's the guns for hire system, which was obviously expanded upon and has been a pretty hyped addition to the franchise. The problem is that it doesn't really serve much of a purpose. I like a couple of the character bits that can crop up here and there, but I honestly don't give a shit about any of these characters enough to want them around for extended periods of time. It's almost as if Ubisoft tried to bring back the buddy system from Far Cry 2, but forgot how that system worked. Namely, those characters could actually die at any point out in the field depending on your own actions. The FC5 main guns for hire are invincible. Which gives me a good excuse to not give a shit about them. Especially since the writers don't do enough with them to begin with. They're just code as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know. Far Cry 5 is kind of what I expected in the end. It's all flash, no substance. I'm not saying it isn't a good game. It's fun. But plenty of games are fun. What Far Cry 5 isn't is essential. It won't be talked about years from now. The same way Primal won't. The same way Far Cry 4 won't. The same way Far Cry 3 won't. Simply because Ubisoft won't commit entirely to what they want to do, all in the name of not antagonizing the player. I've never seen a franchise with so much potential consistently get in the way of itself, time and time again.

    We don't deserve Nintendo.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure that this little lady now has a story to baffle her colleagues with now!

And is anyone else closely following that story about the PS2 Ace Combat trilogy being remastered?

Hey y'all. Is it possible to get a free trial to Xbox live gold if you have never had an account before?

If you make an Xbox Account and log in with it on your Xbox, you have Xbox Live Silver. I'm pretty sure there'll will be buttons that'll be like "Try Gold now" or whatever. Most times there are.

I reinstalled it the other day. Are the lag issues fixed? At launch, it was horrendous.

For the first I played some of Black from way back on the first Xbox and now I can see why people love it so much, I think a full remaster of that game would go down a treat especially after how well Burnout Paradise Remastered was done and is doing in terms of sales.

Black is probably one of the most overhyped games in recent memory. I can still remember reading all the previews in game magazines about how great this game was going to be and it ended up just being this generic shooter.

Eh, it's "destruction" was a big deal at the time. It's got good mechanics, but it's short and is really only worth playing once or twice.

Picked up Mario Odyssey today. Finally have more than one Switch game!

Can't decide if I want to play that or Assassins Creed Origins first, which I've had since Christmas but haven't started. Whichever one I do will be started tomorrow though

Other than that I still have the Crash Bandicoot remake and plan on buying Far Cry 5 and BOTW asap
