Marvin Gaye (/ɡeɪ/; born Marvin Pentz Gay Jr.; April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and I Heard It Through the Grapevine, and duet recordings with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell, later earning the titles Prince of Motown and Prince of Soul.

I feel like his albums with Tammi Terrell are seriously underrated. Pretty magical.

His stuff with Tammi Terrell is fantastic. It was only a relatively recent discovery for me, I didn't hear them until late last year. Those three albums they did together are absolutely marvelous.

He has a duet album with Diana Ross too, that's as good as you'd imagine.

Yesssss one of the greats!! I need to dig into his earlier albums more, but obviously his '70s material is some of the greatest of all time.

Where's best to start with Marvin Gaye? I've heard all the big singles over the years but where would you say is best to start to delve into his back catalogue a bit more?

Also have any of you guys heard this? It's a mix album where Amerigo Gazaway has spliced together Marvin Gaye and Mos Def's (Yasiin Bey) material by using deconstructed samples of Gayes music and mixing them with a combination of Gaye and Def's vocals. Anyways this was a favourite of mine when it dropped the other year.

What's Going On is his masterpiece, definitely start with that.

I was looking at some of my dad's old Marvin Gaye records earlier. Such great albums.

In Our Lifetime remains really underrated. His flirtations with disco were always awesome.

This is actually pretty wonderful. You don't really notice the hodgepodge nature of it unless you're actively thinking about it.

  21. the only thing that even really dates it to me is the really straightforward 'socially conscious' lyrics that dont use any metaphor or anything lol

Tbh, most of the songs on the utterly timeless What's Going On are exactly the same way.

I used to kinda view What's Going On as some insane high points and then solid album tracks tied together with great production, but I've been getting really into "Flying High in the Friendly Sky" and "What's Happening Brother" lately. It helps that they feel like part of a big suite.

The Trouble Man soundtrack doesn't get enough love. Will always love the Russo Brothers for including it in The Winter Soldier haha
