Menswear is top 3 on there for me.

idk if I specifically hear the jimmy influence but it's pretty clear to me that they're very inspired by that era of emo/pop punk. stuff like MCR, taking back sunday, JEW, dashboard, etc. especially if you dig into the DLID/pre-1975 stuff, it's clear that era really inspired them and set the course they're currently on.

Idk how to articulate why I felt they weren’t some of the best songs on the album, best I can come up with is that I felt they were solid but formulaic/same-y (the intros to Settle Down, Pressure, She Way Out, and Chocolate were hard to differentiate for me). I think finally learning the lyrics to the songs helped me appreciate the melodies more too.

For me, my favorites on S/T were always Heart Out, Girls, MONEY, The City, and Sex, and after Girls I always felt the album dropped off a bit in quality and ended kinda weak. Needless to say, I’m realizing the error of my ways and I now think the album is great straight through.

I’m also starting to notice some parallels I never did before between the albums.

The City and Love Me (both track 2 on their respective albums): “If you wanna find love then you know where the city is” vs “Love me, if that’s what you wanna do.”

MONEY and UGH! (again, they share the same placement and both songs tackle addiction, specifically to cocaine): “has he got enough money to spend” vs “when I said I liked it better without my money I lied”; “broken phone, retching on the floor alone” vs “I think I’ve lost my phone so won’t you call it up for me”

I’m sure there’s more, and I know some of the more obvious ones have been touched on, but those were just the two that have popped out to me that I haven’t seen discussed.

  5. Best songs off self-titled are Girls, Menswear and Robbers in my opinion.

Also, does anyone find it odd that An Encounter doesn't lead into Robbers, seeing they're in the same key/tempo? Not that Heart Out isn't a bop, it's just an unexpected transition.

Another obvious comparison is the closers being similar in that both have to do with family, though the entire last side of each album is similar. She Way Out/TMBMD are the last bit of energy, Menswear/Paris are more relaxed, Pressure/Nana have big r&b vibes, and the closers are more raw than anything else.

  7. I think TMBMD and Paris are much more similar than Paris and Menswear are. Menswear is kind of its own thing.

I don't think Menswear and Paris are all that similar in that they bring the energy levels back down while still being some DANCEY pieces of music.

It's from Motion City's tour for I Am The Movie in the UK from 2004 I think? He's 28 now, so yeah he would have probably been 13-14.

He hasn't confirmed it or anything but it's from a UK show in 2004 so he looks like the right age. Sounds and looks exactly like him, and I would not be surprised that he'd be into bands like MCS.

I was looking for an excuse to sub to this thread

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

In the sense that I can hear like *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys singing the harmonies and etc

ILIWYS is so far removed from the boy band moniker that I set up for myself

But both are so quality it hurts so yay

IIRC they posted this as a news piece on AP, so I’m pretty sure it’s him. Either way, considering the location, the fact he was into those kinds of bands and the uncanny resemblance, this is pretty obviously him to me
