Aaron's vocals are a bit too genreric post-hardcore

 

Aaron has grown immensely as a vocalist and I think he is great now.

 

what's with it? are you new to the band?

I think spencer’s voice is fine but I don’t think he’s a particularly good singer. I like it in smaller doses a la vacant mouth.
Still think Aaron’s voice is stellar and unique.

 

Not sure if this has been mentioned but target will sell the CD with 2 bonus tracks, 1 is included with the 7inch package I believe

 

Been listening since 2003!

In fact, I’ve been listening long enough to remember all the people saying the band was ‘dead’ when Aaron left as his voice couldn’t be replaced, haha!

I’ve never experienced this level of hate for Aaron’s voice so must have missed something!

I like both him and Spencer together - I think they work well and make each other better.

 

I know this has no bearing on his singing in the albums, but with the amount of energy he puts into drumming live I think he sings super well and don't know how he does it.

 

Also those people saying that he sounds too scene/post hardcore haven't really been listening to him very well the past several years.

 

I don’t think Aaron is a bad singer necessarily, but I definitely prefer Spencer’s voice. Idk lol Aaron’s voice sounds pretty “scene” to me, one of the things I liked most about Disambiguation is that Spencer’s cleans conveyed more menace/atmosphere imo

 

i'm odd in the fact that the first Underoath song i heard all the way through and enjoyed was actually Sunburnt. from there i went and listened to TOCS - Disambiguation (Disambiguation is actually the record of theirs i've listened to the most). so i can appreciate both Spencer and Aaron's vocals. i have a slight preference for Spencer, but both are good, imo.

 

Or maybe, hear me out on this one, hes a very scene sounding, whiny vocalist whos range isnt all that great. shit, his vocals were a big reason why The Almost was so underwhelming.

 

i barely wanna hear his voice over baritone riffs you think i’m gonna listen to that shit over plaintive acoustic guitars? nah fam.

This conversation is interesting to me. When Aaron left, a good parallel was Tom leaving blink - lots of people simply said, 'it isn't Underoath without Aaron.' His vocals, drums, and songwriting was seen by so many people as THAT integral to who they are as a band. To everyone I knew, that was true (and is true, even with the record made without him).

Clearly, though, not every feels that way. Which is fascinating to me - we're all listening to the same songs and band, but since we hear different things, we aren't really listening to the same songs and band. I guess this is what happens with a band of this size - when you're making gold records and debuting at number 2 on the billboard charts, your fans will be diverse enough to hear different things and like you for different reasons.

 

the difference being, Disambiguation is extremely good, where California is extremely bad

Another difference: Disambiguation was by far the worst charting and selling album since Spencer joined the band, while California went number one and was a massive success for blink.

Regardless, if folks don't like Aaron, I don't know what to say other than I'm glad they're still listening. UO deserves all the success and fans they get, I think.

Spencer is legit a good vocalist though. I like his songwriting a lot more also though I'm not privy to how they delegate the songwriting between members. Just knowing what I know of his struggles with drugs, religion, etc I can kinda tell which songs he had the biggest hand in. Also Disambiguation slaps

 

I figured it was either that or "this could describe Dan from TWY to a tee also" something along those lines

 

(The Almost were very well received btw. Look up those chart numbers. They have sold more albums than quite a few bands.)

 

I’m sure they did! Just seemed like they weren’t super well received critically but I didn’t really have my pulse on that fan base. Seems like they kinda just fell off the map
