Not even close that dbry is bigger. When hbk came back, the company was doing fine. Plenty of mega stars in the company...plenty of top babyface...and a humongous butt load of talent. The wwe didn't need hbk persay at that time.

I'm not saying the wwe is in total dire straits now but no one comes close (maybe aj) to the reaction Bryan gets.

If anything when hbk came back I remember saying ugh great here comes the egotistical asshole again.

It depends on how Shoemaker is defining "bigger." HBK was already one of the best ever when he walked away the first time, and this was a guy coming back after a longer time away & back when wrestling news on the internet was much smaller.

I do think Bryans smaller wwe career hurts him in that sense because that's all most casual fans know.

I dont think you can use the "well the roster is worse" excuse. That HHH/HBK feud was the best thing in the company after the nwo disbanded

eh, disagree. mostly just out of preference.

the state of the company is going to have an impact on how big events are perceived, i think that's perfectly natural. Daniel Bryan is coming back at a time when midcard guys are some of the biggest names on advertising, it's a symptom of the "one really top guy instead of three top guys" mindset they've carried since Cena.

and while HBK/HHH was great, Angle/Lesnar may have been even better. Smackdown had all kinds of fantastic programs around that time.

I just don't think it's fair to try and cage the 2002 audience based on how many guys were over at the time. I could argue, as a counterpoint, that wrestling as a whole was massively more popular, so by default Shawns return is bigger

    that's a perfectly fair point. it's a good question.

But you're using context to figure into what's a bigger moment. When Shawn left the company exploded into awesomeness. Sure he's a great talent but the company didn't miss a beat when he left.

The wwe has still yet to manage anything similar to Bryan (aj but again not to the degree of Bryan).

also we are forgetting that if the eclipsing supernova megastar Roman "The Big Dog" Reigns existed no one would have cared about Michaels

Shoemaker had a great point and imagined if the DBry clearance stuff was kept quiet that day of Smackdown and Sami and KO just started to beat the fuck out of him without anyone knowing about the clearance. WWE would never go that way but it would of been incredible booking if they did.

Especially since it didnt launch the ratings sky high, probably because it came out just hours before the show.

The speculation on if Daniel was cleared...whether Sami/KO's beatdown was a work or them going rogue with D-Bry...their seemingly legit firing. Definitely a missed opportunity, especially for the insane pop that D-Bry gets saying he can wrestle and challenging those two to a match at WM.

Could have worked Reddit for a good week at least

You can't take away credit from Shawn because the business was in a boom period. If Durant leaves the Warriors and the Warriors are still good, it doesn't make him less of a player.

Because Bryan's return is in a worse time for the business makes his return more valuable but it doesn't make it bigger in my opinion. If any of that made sense.

At a local indy show tonight. AR Fox and Jimmy Jacobs are on the card. As soon as I walked in my immediate reaction was to scan the room to see what Fox is gonna jump off tonight.
