How do we know Finn is even straight? The guy has shown no indication either way. Not that it matters anyway.

 

Lol that story comes from PWPix and has no source to back it up. No reason to believe it.

 

Goldust, Velveteen Dream, Ibushi/Omega, etc are all examples of characters that are played up as riding the line of sexuality to some degree and have (mostly) been handled tastefully. There is the Billy & Chuck end of the spectrum as well, but it's been done.

Steph made that same statement around two years ago and it was hit with a ton of backlash. The way they've handled those storylines in the past has most people reluctant, to say the least. As long as we don't get another Billy Gunn fiasco.

 

it's a tough spot because there aren't a whole lot of big, openly gay indie names. i know Progress has a very over trans performer, obviously not lumping identifications in with orientations but it's really what jumps to mind. Jake Atlas also comes to mind... but literally no one else. i'm sure there are plenty i'm missing because PWG is really my only lens into the indies.

 

Darren Young & Sonya Deville have been handled just fine imo, but i wonder if that's not more out of fear of drawing attention to it and alienating the more typical scumbag fans

I feel like non-hetero wrestlers are in a similar position to women in wrestling. Its not enough for them to just be wrestlers. They have to be touted as different. Their personal lives need to be shown in storyline. Outside of a handful of people (mostly married), relationships, sexual orientation, whatever is all left at home. Its important to showcase them for their life, but it doesn't need to be shoehorned into stories. The way Darren and Sonya are portrayed is perfect. We know that they have those backgrounds, and appreciate them being highlighted in a positive tone, but you have writers rooms full of straight men and Vince coming up with these stories. I just worry about it all.

I honestly don't know how I feel about the writing of the Golden Lovers stuff. A lot of it comes off really hokey in the ring (wrestling, amirite). The behind the stage stuff works, because they are being very tasteful about all of it.

Been using this website for the past 6 years to get my wrestling news actually. It has been pretty damn accurate. Usually they cite the source though.

 

I absolutely do not trust the WWE to write a respectful story about a gay wrestler where the focus is the fact that they are gay.

 

Any news that stems from or relies on that interview with NBC from a couple years ago should be taken with a grain of salt

 

I'm not sure it's been discussed but I've heard Omega and similar stories, I'm sure NJPW would handle it a ton better along with Kenny. Kenny may actually be gay? Idk, I hear so much stuff I can't remember.

 

Either way I highly doubt Vince would find a respectable way to integrate a gay character into wrestling.

Velveteen is the closest we have, and he comes off as less gay and more using other people's discomfort with their sexuality as a mind game
