Yes...but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts

Well...it wasn't a surprise. Been saying this since before the first single release:
    Here's what Rapture does right.

Synthesizers: C'mon, listen to 0:35-0:54 (prechorus) This is what makes me wonder if some users gave it two or three listens with the proper headphones. Chris Dudley is about to put up a monster ambiance performance on Erase Me, up there with albums such as The Devil Wears Prada's Zombie EP and O'Brother's Endless Light. this album is far more going to showcase his ability than Grant or James.

Guitar chord progressions: Alright, let's get this out the way. Generic 4/4 chorus with 4 notes played in a sequence twice, but again, that's not the focus instrument. The focus instrument is Chris Dudley, and I believe that's what is pissing fans off, but they haven't consciously realized it yet. They want a ripping scale or power chord. That aside, however, 1:20-1:30 is lovely, the bridge sounds like a DTGL interlude, and there's also a great riff buried in the last 15 seconds.

Vocals: Spencer's layering in the chorus and post-chorus is extremely well done. At first, it almost sounds like pitch correct or compression. Nope, you have at least 3 layers (4 on the line "Hang me out to dry") consistently.
Not logical, if anything, they should be higher man! Don't let your hype die, because you've now stomached what every review so far, Jason, and Drew have announced is the most accessible (i.e. "bland") song on the album, and it still has some good things to offer.

    That'll be next!

Yeah, I saw you heard that one.

@Colin Your Enthusiasm are you keeping a list of albums you've heard for this year?

When you say "classic STP", what era are you referring to?

All of their 90's input is classic (Core- No.4) and even Shangri has its moments.

It's a good mix of Purple-Shangri though. Doesn't have the heavier side like Core

@KidLightning I'm pretty unfamiliar with Fickle Friends, but this has been enjoyable so far! I'm on the third track (Swim) now. Pretty upbeat and catchy music and it has my foot tapping a lot

Hmmm . . . I'll have to check it out. I love Core, but Purple and Tiny Music are my favorites (with 4 being about even with Core for me). I haven't really listened to anything past Shangri-La though.

    How's the new vocalist?

There really hasn't been much since Shangri-La so it won't take you much more than about an hour to catch up to the new one haha

I was also unfamiliar as well. Only checked them out because the name made me think of Kevin Devine. It's definitely fun, catchy music. I don't know how much lasting power it will have for me, but I can see myself putting it on when I need a pick-me-up.

He's phenomenal. It's probably closest to Tiny Music, so you'll probably love it. He sounds a lot like Scott, but doesn't sound like he's trying to imitate him or be him if that makes sense.

Didn't they do some stuff with Chester from Linkin Park, and then bring Scott back (once or twice) and now another vocalist?

Yes...but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts

I remember watching no one sing along to Illuminator or Catch Myself Catching Myself in 2010, the day of Disambiguation's release concert. Watching Spencer alone, years later, wheel out his Sleepwave gear cases still stenciled "Underoath" before a show in Poughkeepsie...performing songs that no one cared to sing to either.

Observing the juxtaposition in career trajectory between these shows, and the massive Rebirth tour was really interesting, from a fan's point of view. Aaron was drumming for freakin' Paramore, selling out solo shows, yet nobody cared about Spencer during the break. Whatever Underoath brings to the table, it's not fair to hold them held to previous standards. The members deserve something better than that.

Also worth adding that I'm a huge Stone Temple Pilots fan, so I went in with very high expectations even after being let down by their S/T effort with Scott and wasn't that impressed with their work with Chester.

  22. Barely Listening was my introduction to the band and it's probably my favorite Pilot Speed song. Might be in my top 10 songs period.

They did an EP with Chester which was okay, and brought Scott back prior to that EP where they put out a very lackluster S/T record.

I believe that their only new releases were the 2008 (I think?) self-titled album with Scott and then an EP several years later with Chester.

Ah, okay. All the drama around them made them tiresome to me and also made it seem like they had a much higher output during that period.
