Just finished the book (read it in one sitting, something I almost never do). Wow. Totally different but just as great. I've heard mixed things about the other two in the trilogy, are they worth reading?

I’m a little more than halfway through #2. It’s very, very different and not nearly as unique and interesting. But I’m enjoying it. Just not as much.

Saw today in a theater of about 30 people and no one said a word when leaving. I think we were all mindfucked.

Comes out tomorrow on Netflix in the UK. Pretty excited to see what all this chat is about.

  6. It’s rare that a movie actually makes me physically drop my jaw in shock but the bear scene did that

  7. Also, this should have been as big as Arrival at the box office. What a shame

Just watched this movie. It was both beautiful and haunting. That near scene was siiiiiiick. I'm hoping that they adapt further because I'm sure A LOT more needs to be explained. Garland is a visionary and there's a lot of questions but I'm pretty happy with what I saw.

what exactly happened with the botched release? did the studio just not think it would do well?

Decided to head to the theaters to watch this last night and I do not regret it. There was about 30 people in the theater and it was one of the quietest rooms I’ve been in.

I’ve been thinking about the movie all day and I already want to watch it again. I was hooked from the opening scene, but the army operating base in the Shimmer onward was a whole other level.

  12. From what I read, they thought the movie was too "confusing" for general audiences. I think they went easy on promotion, and I know that outside of the US it's not getting a proper theatrical release.

Watched this again last night and I loved it just as much as the first time. The movie didn’t effect me quite the same way it did as when I saw it in theaters though.

Watched this for the first time last night and I (obviously) loved it.

My only minor gripe was that in the age of Netflix dramas that have hour-long episodes you can binge, you can really tell how little room for development there is in a 2 hour movie. The movie felt so fast- I couldn't believe how quickly Lena got to the lighthouse, and I thought that the other women would have been around a lot longer than they were. These are more complaints about the medium of film vs the medium of television, though. I feel like this would have been even better as a miniseries.

I thought there was a lot of cool imagery referencing the shimmer. For instance, when Lena rolls out the plastic in the bedroom for painting, or when she sneaks into her husband's quarantined bed, seemed like obvious ones. And then the cell-division references that others have mentioned.
I know they kind of left it up in the air about whether or not this was the real Lena in the end, but I was watching pretty closely when they exchange the grenade between hands, and I really can't see how the real Lena could have been the one blown up. Was really interesting how she didn't answer her husband's clone when he asked her if she was Lena.

I said this a couple pages back but I think it was clear that the real Lena came back at the end. The shimmering in her eyes was meant to illustrate that she had been changed by the Shimmer’s refractory effects so thoroughly that she is no longer the same person she was when she went in. Almost like she brought back so much of it with her that she’s essentially just as much a product of Area X as the Kane clone was .

Ultimately it doesn’t matter which one she was.

But I’m settled on her being the original.
