It's not bad to love an album with the First Single on it.

Well especially that album and their early ep's later stuff is much more acoustic and folky but just as good.

    Torches Together

Well, if you are gonna kick an album off, it should be with a bang. And man oh man, this song kicks off with a bang. This is musically so far my favorite MWY album opener; the guitars sound so good in this one, and that kick ass riff in the background. The poem song singing of MWY is strong as ever in this one, and it works with this music which isn't something I would have guessed if you played me just the instrumental of this. I like the cool little clapping part too as the music just builds to be more insane. Also...STRUM THE GUITAR. STRUM THE GUITARRRR. YOU PLAYED THE FLUTE BUT NO ONE WAS DANCING....These lyrics are something that I could have seen my best friend and I singing non ironically as we were drunk just for laughs; not because they're bad but because they're so random. (We did this with Andrew McMahon's "I take caffeine to the bloodstream" line from I'm Ready, for example). Great intro.

    January 1979
Is it just me or does this album have a lot more energy this go around? I like this; and its still a different style. ATC was a more aggressive mewithoutYou, while this album seems to be more of a faster paced, energetic and kinetic version of the band. This is my third album with them and this is the third different sound of theirs, I enjoy that. They still sound like themselves though. This is a fast paced, fun song to listen to, but it didn't grab me as much as Torches did on the first go around. Perhaps on repeat listens that is likely to change, as it was not a bad song by any means!

    Tie Me Up! Untie Me!
    ..
Song title wat? Anyway, wow that opening guitar is sick; and that bass line too! This one is more of a groovy type of song, and I like it. Musically this is the most diverse of the three tracks so far. It has a lot of layers to it, and I can really dig this. Lyrically, its just as poetic and well thought out as you would expect from this band, and does not disappoint. I may like this one the best on this album so far, if not in my higher ranking overall mwY songs. A + 10/10 song. I have less to say about this song just because its just hard to explain, and in the best way possible.

    Leaf
This is different. Starting out soft and well plucked guitars, this one explodes during the choruses. Its also the shortest song and the one that seems to rely the most on instrumentals, with the vocals fading out of the song fairly early on. I liked it, but it wasn't as strong as the past few songs, although this could change on repeat listens.

    Disaster Tourism
This sees some of the haunting, daunting darker sides of their songs come to the foreground. Musically the guitars are top notch and loud, shredding. But the vocals are dreary for the first half of the song, giving this song this extremely dark sound. It works so damn well, and then when the vocals finally do pick up they are sort of distorted behind the guitar in a way, which roars and crackles in a harder rock sound. This was something else for this band, and I liked this a lot.

    Seven Sisters
This song was ok, its got that fast paced energy the rest of the songs prior to it had, and it has some top notch lyrics. Sadly though this one didn't do much for me, which is a shame because it started out with such potential that I was eagerly awaiting for that moment when the song clicked with me; it just never really came unfortunately. Again, repeat listens could correct this.

    The Soviet
This song sees mwY progressing, and incorporating some different elements into their songs. Roaring drums, shredded and destroyed electric guitars played rhythmically in the background while the vocals are just as messed up. Its bizarre sounding, but its also damn cool to hear it unfold. This is the darkness that they do well, the slower menacing sounds that this album hasn't had as much as this time around. I liked this song quite a bit, and I actually repeated it just because I wanted to hear it a second time when it was done.

    Paper Hanger
This was...something. Did the wrong band put this song on the album? This was so out of left field compared to everything prior to this song on the album except for a few fleeting places where his familiar vocals come in. Musically, and half of the vocal parts, this was just different for them. I didn't like this song really, unfortunately. I am no expert on mwY by any means, but this one just felt jarring on this album; perhaps if it had been earlier in the album or something. At this point though, it didn't stomach well.

    My Exit, Unfair
That slow, moody intro is just friggin awesome. It was kind of relaxing, actually. Then the one minute mark hits, and this song begins to take off with the guitars taking over for the slower played ones, and his vocals coming in. This actually may have been the song I had the most fun with. His vocals still have that poem speak singing like parts, but its also kind of smooth and rhythmic in this one, as is the guitars that have this sort of prog rock sound to them in the background, and actually had me busting out the old air guitar. This is up there with my favorites on the album.

    Four Word Letter (Part Two)
This song is great. Such raw emotion, and the lyrics in this one are at their prime. Love it. These ones are a lot more grounded and personal; the one issue I have with mwY sometimes is I have to really study the lyrics to try and make them make sense, or listen multiple times. This one however, has more earnest lyrics that were able to be picked out on first notice. And that cool chanting that came in for the last two minutes! Haha, it was so bizarre, but it actually worked! This song was higher up on my list.

    Carousels
I'm sorry...this one didn't do anything for me. Musically and lyrically it's not bad, but for some reason I did not connect with this one as much as I wanted to. I kind of zoned out on the times I listened to this song.

    Son Of A Widow
Now THIS is a welcomed change of a closer. This song is by far the most different song, and maybe the most 'normal' sounding song the band has made that I have heard so far. Its passionate, its soft, its somber, the lyrics are great and it fits so well in the context of the album even though. This song had so much raw emotion in its delivery and its execution, you cannot help but like it. Its definitely a great way to close the album, and definitely one of my favorite songs by this band. This one was a keeper, and I have listened to this song more than any mwY track on repeat since this trade of me listening to their whole discography began. A+
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Conclusion:
This album was good, but I found more trouble connecting to it than I did with Brother, Sister and AC. There were some damn good songs on here, some of the best I have heard from the band; but as an overall album this was the weaker of the 3 I have heard so far. This is not to say its bad by any means, but it is the one I am least likely to return to often; even if it contains some of the songs I want to return to the most. Paradox here. I'd have to give this one a 7/10, which is still a dang good rating. So far even with this being the weakest of the three albums they've had a pretty solid discography from what I have heard; will they jump up to my favorite bands list? So far, I don't think so, but I can say that I do enjoy them.

I'll go back to reading X-Men comics.

I remember getting high speed internet at my house when I was little and my parents were like "don't Google 'X-Men', it might turn up pictures of something else."
