  3. Lol I kinda imagined Mark just yelling by “Thomas!” And Tom would run over and give big hugs. Shit would be rad and then they’d shit talk each other as they walked their separate ways.

Just realized I’m seeing them on St Patrick’s day. Hmm... I wonder if they’ll play Happy Holidays with the lights off!?!

  5. If blink could update ATST to “...life sucks, I know,” that’d be great. <\vent>

I think they will have to be more progressive on the next album on if they want it to be successful. I think a lot of the commercial success of California came from the memberberries causal fans got from hearing pop-punk blink again. I don't think that will work again.

    Things have changed.

I would say it doesn't really matter what they put out. There are still so many people who are oblivious that Tom left the band. People go to the shows to hear the old hits – which even the band recognizes, as shown by their reluctance to embrace the new album in a live setting and instead play mostly the same setlist they have for years.

Blink will continue to be successful because of their past, so what they do now is probably largely irrelevant to their future.

For sure they will still be popular, but i was talking about pure album sales. I dont think they can expect a new throwback album to sell as good as California.

  11. California had these these going for it, which most likely helped catapult sales:
    1. First album without Tom and with Matt Skiba
    2. New producer
    3. Throwback sound/poppy singles

The general curiosity among fans will probably be lower for whatever they do next, especially if they use Feldmann again since we all know more or else what to expect now.

    4. People knew blink were back lol. I remember in 2014, when Tom said an album was coming, FB pages would post that news, and a lot of feedback was like "omg blink have reformed"

Yeah its pretty crazy how so many people thought Blink never got back together in 2009. Like even if you didnt listen to Neighborhoods, how did you not hear about the massive tours they've done between 2009 - 2013?

Pretty sure the 2009-2010 reunion run was like the highest grossing tour at the time.

  14. Yeah, people had no idea they got back together when Neighborhoods came out. There were people who were even surprised when Dogs Eating Dogs came out. But there's probably even more people who don't know DED exists.

There’s absolutely people that don’t know it exists. It isn’t even on streaming services! I saw them in 2013 in their home town and nobody knew the title track when they played it live

I was really surprised to see that BTD has over 70 million plays on Spotify. Its more than many of their previous hits (which isnt really a fair comparison as they were released before Spotify existed). But still. Much more than i thought.

I remember stating on AP at the time it came out how I was surprised that they didn't put more effort into marketing that EP and was bombarded with people saying "It's fuckin' blink 182 man. They don't NEED marketing!" and "It's just an EP for the FANS!" haha. I'm not sure what happened back then.

I would say within my friend group and on social media, only people who still actively followed blink cared about Neighborhoods, but I swear, "Bored to Death" was absolutely everywhere.

    Things have changed.

Again, the subset of consumers who know anything about Feldmann and his influence on the band – or even CARE, for that matter – is so small compared to all the people who are aware of Blink-182.

99% of the general public doesn't care who produced an album. All they know is they know the band name and liked the old songs.

  21. I think people overestimate the amount of people that follow message boards about a band and their producer and any drama versus those that go "Oh, that band, I like them" and listen when it shows up on their Spotify playlist.

Yeah I don't know how much "experimentation" would translate into boosted album sales if at all, it's really hard to say. With this band, I find it hard to believe that the general public cares if they ever sound like anything other than "Bored to Death" or who produces the album. I just hope they are a little more experimental for my own selfish reasons. haha.

Don't forget the words of Bill Stevenson:

So it doesn't matter actually if it's experimental or not - but if it's satisfies all the parties - band, producer, label and management. Can it be experimental? The answer is easily, yes - it can be a poppy record and at the same time experimental, it can be a step to different genres like trip hop, indie, ska, reggae, etc...but it will an experimental for blink-182.

FWIW someone asked Travis on his IG account to play Josie and a bunch of Deluxe songs and Travis responded “Done”.

Saturday’s set will be interesting to see.
