Blink 182 discuss plans for their 'experimental' next album - NME

Here Mark said that in california they kinda wanted to go back to the original sound, but that in the next record they want to push the boundaries again.

We can however count on atleast a few glossy pop-songs if feldmann is producing, which we can expect he will.

I would welcome that, but I've learned to take whatever this band says with a grain of salt... We'll get whatever comes out.

Yeah, i know a lot of people are super negative about this era of blink, and i also think california is worse than most of their previous records. But i'd rather have this version of blink, than no blink at all. Im sure there will always be a few songs that i like on new albums. Im just happy that blink is active, and that i can hope that someday MAYBE they'll write a record that i love again.

Oh yeah, definitely. I still really like California, but somehow I think the deluxe edition might have hurt the overall value of this era. It was just so many tracks of pretty similar sounding songs that I think people might have gotten a little burned out.

Ideally, they would work with a new producer just for the sake of shaking things up, but if we end up with another California...well, that's just the way it is.

I’m seeing them live in 6 days and if the setlist isn’t even slightly different it’ll probably be my last time seeing them until they finally change up

I think they should be using different producers (which i think they intended for california, before they clicked with feldmann). It would make for an interesting record for sure. I wouldn't mind them using Feldmann for one or two songs. He can produce the poppy radio songs, so they stay relevant ha.

I still really like California, but we have seen Mark's capacity for change on the +44 record. I hope Feldman doesn't produce this, though.

I bet Feldmann becomes the 4th member of the band by the end of this year.

It baffles me how repetitive many of the guitar parts to the california songs are, when hearing those cool clips of Mark recording songs for the second +44 album/his solo thing, before blink reunited in 2009.

And considering how quickly he works, he'll probably have the whole next blink record written before Mark and Matt even get into the studio.

I really don't mind Feldman's songwriting. What I can't stand is his production. He sucks the life out of the instruments. The new Blink, Good Charlotte, Goldfinger, and Makeout albums all have the same sounds coming out of the instruments and it all sounds like plastic.

  15. I was thinking this too. I have no gauge on his songwriting ability. Never been a GF fan so maybe I’ve never been a fan but yes all those albums sounded like shit. How did 311 sound so 311 still though? That’s the outlier IMO

I think Feldy only produced 4 or 5 songs on the new 311 album......but damn, I love Mosaic so much.

I wouldn't necessarily say that about 311. I would say 311 all have more identifiable playing styles than those other bands, but Feldy still made them sound more generic. Chad has tighter drumming and a really unique snare sound, but Feldy kind of minimized that by making him sound a lot different on his five tracks than the rest of the album. He also used a ton of samples (electronic snares and claps) in the five he produced.

Other than that, "Too Much to Think" sounds a lot like some of Goldfingers ska/reggae influenced songs on the last record, and "Perfect Mistake" had that same annoying crunchy guitar that the blink record had. I think if anything, Feldmann's influence was just minimized by only having produced 5 of the 17 tracks.

I didn't know Feldmann only did a few songs on 311, I listened to the new album the other day and loved it.

Anyways I trust that they'll do more of what Mark has said he wants to do. He's done plenty of producing on his own and if he wants to be more experimental I doubt he'll let himself get pushed around. Regardless I'd say there's 13 songs I can say I love that came out of both California discs so I'm not sweating it much either way.

That's weird cos I just saw on Mark's Twitter that HE was at Disneyland today. They were just a few hours apart from running into each other for a nice awkward reunion wearing Mickey ears.
