  2. Daisy Ridley Says J. J. Abrams Wrote Story Drafts For Star Wars Episodes VIII & IX
“Here’s what I think I know. J. J. wrote Episode VII, as well as drafts for VIII & IX. Then Rian Johnson arrived and wrote TLJ entirely. I believe there was some sort of general consensus on the main lines of the trilogy, but apart from that, every director writes and realizes his film in his own way. Rian Johnson and J. J. Abrams met to discuss all of this, although Episode VIII is still his very own work. I believe Rian didn’t keep anything from the first draft of Episode VIII.”

I'm curious to see how opinions change on TLJ over time. There's plenty of films that weren't revered when they first came out that people generally talk about as classics today. I'm not sure that same evolution of opinions could ever take place in at this day in age, with everyone's opinions being set in stone on social media.

  5. TLJ is good and TFA is good. That's all that matters to me.

Basically, yea. And Rogue One was fine.

I’ve enjoyed the books to varying degrees.

Rebels has been incredible. Some all time favorite SW moments have come from the show now.

I don’t get why so many people are upset at what Lucasfilm has been doing since the sale to Disney.

Rebels has brought some of the greatest pieces of Star Wars canon. I could watch that Obi-wan episode 100 times over and not get bored of it.

Going off of that Daisy interview, these quotes are from 2015, people have kind of just forgotten about them I guess ha. They have some basic idea for the trilogy but also clearly didn’t want to hamstring the filmmakers and writers.

But there are plenty of ways in which the new trilogy will be different. Kennedy says:

“I think we can’t explore in quite as much detail issues of compassion, the way [Lucas] did in terms of the values of the Jedi. But we’re going to get there, let’s put it that way. In the arc of all three movies, that will increase.”

...But as the second film in a trilogy, how much freedom does he (Rian) have? Kennedy explains:
“We know where we’re going, but only in the broadest sense. When Rian came in and started writing his script, he started from scratch, other than knowing what we had done in Episode VII and projecting out where it was going. He then sat down and put pen to paper, and it’s 100 percent him.”

JJ Abrams & Kathleen Kennedy on Star Wars Episode 8 and 9

Love this JJ interview from 2015 as well: J.J. Abrams, Star Wars Superfan, on Directing The Force Awakens

“We really tried to look at it from the inside out. What makes this story have a beating heart? What makes it romantic or fun or surprising or heartbreaking or hysterically funny? We simply approached this narrative from the point of view that this is a story about a young man and a young woman, not with the idea that we can do anything we want.”

Also, I really like what Adam Driver has said about the trilogy. He’s stated how he has a very general sense of his character (I’m just speculating, but most likely they had to provide some context to the whole “You’re going to kill Han Solo” before they got him to sign on to three films ha), but also that he doesn’t really want to have too much of an opinion in order to be somewhat surprised.

I know this is not non-movie, but I feel some here would be interested in these quotes plus Daisy’s quote above

    Thanks for posting.

Biggest thing I took out was: Abrams added that, “It’s a thrill to see [Johnson] take things and elevate them beyond what we had imagined at the time.” But supposedly Rian said "fuck you" to everything JJ did according to some people. We have no idea what JJs plan was. I loved TFA a lot, but I think it lacks the SW moments that Ill remember forever. TLJ is loaded with them imo.

I think JJ's consistent vision may have been good and may have made a more consistent and flowing story, but we needed somebody like Rian to push the boundries on what it is possible for SW going forward. Thats how were going to get true masterpieces. I feel like the creators involved are kind of afraid to go in the SW pool. Abrams, Gareth were just of sticking their toes in to see how the water is. Howard had to be careful as well considering the situation for Solo as well.

Then Rian just was like fuck it and does a front flip into the pool screaming at the top of his lungs.

Even if TLJ didnt work for people, Im hoping his courage to not look at the SW toys in the same ways we have in the past will be infectious to filmmakers/writers who also want to bring their own personal brand of creativity now rather than just making a good star wars movie. I have a feeling JJ's episode 9 will be much bolder and bigger because Rian gave him the inspiration to, and I hope in the future we will look back at TLJ and Rian as the start of a new era of Star Wars.

I enjoyed it! As much of a ending it was, they sure opened a huge fucking can of worms in those final moments...

    Also....

    “Begin, again”.....

Yeah. It definitely didnt have anywhere near the emotional impact of Kanan dying but I thought it was a great finale. Really well written. The score was fucking insanely good. The visuals were also incredible as always. The action was solid. Not going to lie when the spacewhales showed up I was like.... okay. Earllier in the episdoe I was like okay I guess the Loth wolves are the Lord of the Rings Eagles of Star Wars. Then fucking SPACE WHALES save the day. It didnt bother me but I was just like...okay SURE! lol

Cant believe Zeb didnt die. Loved the Palpatine stuff but thought it was kind of random in regards to the rest of the finale even though it tied to last episode. Loved how the holo was going back and forth between both versions of the Emperor. Loved the early Praetorian guards showing up.

Id say it was overall solid, but the last 2 minutes are the big takeaway though obviously. Like. most important question is when in the hell did Kanan have time to bang Hera? right? I mean. really?!

Then the HUGE time jump to when the Empire is defeated is something I dont think AAAANNNNNYYYBOBOOOODDYy saw coming. Like wow. THE END of a finale of a series is a cliffhanger?!. Just wow. Even though Im bummed Filoni is going to be too busy with a new animated series to do live action, Im really intrigued. Sabine and AShoka going to find Ezra and Thrawn wherever the fuck theyve been for 10 years. Is Ashoka going to train Sabine to be a Jedi?! Where was Ashoka for the Rebellion and Luke?! Was that who Yoda was talking about in Empire?! (jk) Just ashoka and Ashley back for more Star Wars warms my heart. Im iffy about more Ezra considering hes probably my 3rd favorite character of this show, but Im interested.

Will Hera be back? Will Ezra train Caleb Jr. to be a JEdi?

    This is crazy.

The only thing I can manage to say about Rebels right now is that I’m sad it’s over. Going to need to collect my thoughts on this one.
