Def check out 2049, that cinematography award was so deserved. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever watched, it always amazes me when I watch it.

 

Oscar thoughts:

I'm psyched Jordan Peele won best original screenplay. Favorite win of the night. I wish Get Out or Dunkirk had won best picture. Those are the two movies from this year that will stand the test of time.

Neither of the lead acting wins were particularly exciting to me. Gary Oldman was nice, but predictable. I could've done with a Timothee Chalamet or Daniel Kaluuya spoiler for best actor and Margot Robbie for best actress. Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Brie Larson, and Leo all delivered some of my favorite performances of the decade so kind of sad I feel so indifferent about the winners this year.

Very glad The Greatest Showman didn't win over Coco for best original song. I hope Sufjan keeps writing for movies. Surreal seeing him perform up there.

Kobe Bryant accepting an Oscar in a category I couldn't care less about was delightfully random.

Lady Bird coming away with nothing sucks.

Tiffany Haddish could read the phone book and I'd laugh.

I still need to see Phantom Thread.

 

The idea of extreme right-wing commentators getting mad about the "fish sex" movie makes the whole thing much more enjoyable.

 

The Mike Pence joke about CMBYN was highly enjoyable.

 

So, a few things: One, I go to see the oscar nominated shorts every year as tradition with my girlfriend, and neither one of us thought that Dear Basketball was going to win, so I'm surprised. The animation was great, but I didn't think Kobe's narration was anything special, neither inspiring or thought provoking beyond what you would think basketball means to basketball players.

Secondly, I've said this before, but it bears repeating now, it's really bothersome to me that those that behaved inappropriately a decade ago are forgiven, and those whose behavior is just coming to light now are outcast and shunned immediately and their career is over. I think the chances are very slim for any of these artists being accused now to come back, so why are we awarding Kobe? Or if the academy is turning a blind eye for some reason, why wasn't there a stance taken by the audience? Why is it just water under the bridge?

Lastly, I think it was during the coco speech, but the idea that every category should be 50/50 representation by gender every time is ludicrous. I agree by the law of averages that in the future, it should work out to equal representation over time (if discrimination is eliminated on the hiring side and there are equal numbers of talent from both genders in the industry), but I highly doubt that by truly selecting the best, you will always get a 50/50 breakdown. If men and women where hired equally, you'd have some years where women take the most nominations, but the idea that an AWARDS show, should hold to a representative standard, rather than evaluating and then honoring the best talent, is flawed. I can take the comment on face value that it's a vast improvement, and a great trend that women are being giving the roles that receive recognition, but that's about all I agree with.

Nice to see Roger Deakins win. After watching the live action and animated shorts I'm surprised by both winners.

 

hands down the best moment of the show was when they started playing the music during Robert Lopez's acceptance speech then abruptly stopped when he said it was for his dead mom lmao

 

It still said "Emma Stone La La Land"

 

Art awards are hard. Make good movies. You’ll be successful at the box office and online streaming.

People are also trying to create too many narratives around these award shows.

 

Completely agree about Kobe.

I am nursing the worst hangover bc we popped a bottle of champagne when Get Out won screenplay and then Eva performed right after so we chugged all the champagne. All worth it.
