Was hoping for Baby Driver but expecting Dunkirk.

 

War movies win tech awards, especially war movies with Best Picture nominations. I hoped some of that Whiplash magic would've rubbed off on Baby Driver.

Speaking of upsets, Whiplash winning Best Film Editing that year was one.

surprising amount of mentions of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World tonight, that's 2 so far gotta keep the countdown going

 

It’s bizarre that Dunkirk took all 3 nominations and Baby Driver came out empty handed.

This doesn't age well. Especially when there's at least three other actors that shoulda won in that movie instead.

 

Not saying he deserved to win, just saying it was an upset at the time.

I mean, you can't fault the movie for that though. Also he gets riddled with bullets in it, so it's a bit cathartic when you think about it that way.

I personally just don't think they did. The Academy just always loves to give the tech awards to prestige war films, whenever possible. Also, at least in the Film Editing category, Dunkirk had the added wrinkle of the multiple timeline thing, which I'm sure a bunch of voters were also taken in by.
