So my son turned one a couple weeks ago, and he has been SOOOOO much different than my daughter was at this age. Probably doesn’t help that there was a five year gap between them so I don’t remember certain things. He has an insane appetite. I just can’t keep up with him. He just woke up from a nap and ate an entire hot dog, an entire avacado, and now he’s working through a pile of cheese puffs with no end in sight. This kid is nuts!

  5. That’s rad! Our son wasn’t super interested in eating and was on his own curve weigh wise. Doctors were probably close to calling CPS on us but we fed and fed as much and as best we could. Turns out after a series of thing that he just has marfan syndrome. No big dead but is consistent with his weight. Whew!

Do most parents in here have tablets for their children?

How often do y'all let them use it?

    Do y'all hate it?

I'll preface my answer with I respect every parent and their decision, but there's no way I'd give my kid a tablet. I understand most people think Ash's mom and I are super square and granola, but I think it's best for him to play with toys, and be outside (which he LOVES, and I mean LOVES to do). Until he was 2 there was zero TV time for him, and now that he's just over two, it's very limited, and he only watches Planet Earth style shows. It was one of the more important things his mom and I discussed before he was even born, the other main one being food. But I'm happy with our decision, I'm not sure when I'll decide to let him have one.

Understandable in all points, he's your child you raise him how you see fit. No judgement from me!

If anything I wish I had that kind of discipline to be honest.

My son uses our iPad. He doesn’t really care for it honestly. But recently the doctor said he couldn’t run and jump for about two weeks so we introduced him to video games. Now he loves that but he equally enjoys playing outside. He has never been into toys really. Except for tools. He’s 3 btw

We've just seen a huge jump in my son's vocabulary from him watching videos on his iPad it's insane. It's not that we don't teach him things either, we are constantly trying to teach him stuff but I'm starting to see just how limited I can be in what I'm teaching him.

  12. Our son has very limited TV time but now that he’s 2.5, we’re more lax about it. We watch with him though and it’s almost exclusively PVS and Disney films (I work on them so he’d better know his stuff. Lol).

In terms of tablets, no. He uses our phones in EXTREME last resort situations when we need him to stop and focus for a minute (if he’s hyper before brushing his teeth or getting dressed.) but that’s not a crutch, it’s a tool and he seems to understand that. The Daniel tiger app, for example, has little 2-3 minute clips for when we need those minutes of calm focus which is nice. One day he’ll get his own something but I don’t see it happening soon outside of any leapfrog toys or whatever.

I will second the whole vocabulary jump though. He used to get an episode of Daniel tiger every couple days before he was 2. Now it’s about once or twice a day and he soaks up so much!

We got our son a Kindle for Kids (Fire Kids Edition) a while back. He's 3 1/2 now and hardly ever uses it anymore. Actually, over the weekend he asked to play on it for the first time in what seemed like forever. I forgot we even had it. I think we got it for him when he was around 2. He really only used it when we were at restaurants or in public where he'd concentrate on that instead of running all over the place in places that he shouldn't.

If he used it at home, we'd only let him use it for a short amount of time. But he definitely learned some basic skills on it, because most of the games or programs on it are very educational or teach some early learning skills in some form or another. My son is at a stage where he's much more interested in playing with his toys at home - and is obsessed with playing outside - than he is with watching TV and/or playing on his tablet. Really the only time he even watches TV is first thing in the morning when he's still tired and just eating breakfast and then right before bed to get him to calm down.

It's funny, my daughter is 6 months old, and I find her reaching for my phone all the time (I don't let her use it or look at it). It's crazy to think that we didn't grow up with ANY of this stuff and now all our kids will know cell phones, tablets, all you can watch TV at the very first moments of their lives. It really scares me at how some of these kids will grow up being around all this since the day they were born.

We bought our son a Kindle as well but there are certain times of the day he is allowed to use it, such as after dinner and the apps that are on there are all educational so that helps a lot. Plus, it also helps that part of my wife’s job description is finding and installing educational apps on iPads for her autistic children at the school she works at. So if you all need ideas of good apps to use let me know and I’ll run it by her.

For us, my son threw the biggest fits if he wasn't allowed to have a phone/tablet and now that he's been around then more and it's become less of a "special" thing he's gotten alot better about it.

My three year old has one. Honestly, I kinda regret getting it for him. We limit his use quite a bit. He has done very well with potty training, but every time he has his tablet, he pees his pants. He gets really grouchy when we take it away from him. It's too stimulating.

But when we give it to him, he sits quietly and plays by himself, which can be a life saver sometimes.

Yep that's how I feel. He'll sit the longest and behave when he has his "pad" it's to the point now where he always wants it out and on but not always actively playing with it, he just kinda sets it down with videos playing and goes on about his playing with his kitchen or blocks it whatever else. If you turn it off though he knows immediately and there will be hell to pay, even if he's in the back of the house, playing in his room or something, HE ALWAYS KNOWS!

  19. After today’s appointment it’s looking like another loss for us. Now it’s waiting for it to pass and then looking into whether we remove fubroids or try again without intervention. Two in a row is tough though. Just sharing an update.

So sorry to hear this. My wife and I also had lost two in a row (I told you about the 14-week one - there was a second one a few months after that where she lost at about 5 or 6 weeks). She ended up seeing multiple specialists, and even switched doctors at one point until we ultimately had our second. I know how frustrating and dark and terrible the feeling is. I'm hopeful things will eventually work out for you guys.

Is your wife close with any other girls who are going through this? My wife luckily (for lack of a better term) had several other girls she knew pretty well that had experienced similar situations so it helped her immensely just to talk to them and share their experiences together. I obviously tried my best to be there for her as well, but I feel like her being able to talk with girls who knew exactly what she was going through helped her a lot.
