The only category I care super strongly about this year is Best Cinematography and that's because Roger Deakins is long overdue for a win and also because BR2049 is maybe the best looking movie I've ever seen and this category is maybe the only one BR2049 has an actual shot of winning.

disappointing in the sense that it’s similar to scorsese for the departed and he was much more deserving for other movies, not that he isn’t talented or whatever

Don't count it out for visual effects and production design as well.

I would love for a Lady Bird best picture upset. Also I'd much rather see Shape of Water sweep than 3B, so I'm okay with GDT getting the spotlight.

Yeah I mean at the end of the day, at least Three Billboards likely won't walk away being declared the Best Picture. As much as I think Phantom Thread, CMBYN, Lady Bird, Dunkirk, and Get Out are better than it, The Shape of Water was very enjoyable and I do love that GDT is finally being recognized with awards for his work.

If I had to guess which of the Best Picture nominations will be the ones people are regularly watching ten years from now, it would be Lady Bird & Get Out. Not that that should be what determines this award (while I love both, I don't think either is the best overall film of this year), but I think those will end up having the most staying power and rewatchability.

  8. I haven't seen The Insult (L'insulte), but I've seen the other Foreign Language nominees, and On Body and Soul (Teströl és lélekröl) was by far my favorite. I'm guessing The Square takes it, though. It's the one I've seen talked about the most.

planning on seeing loveless before sunday

  10. Dunkirk was easily my least favorite of the BP noms I've seen, and probably tied with TDKR for least favorite Nolan film.

I loved Get Out, but I do not see it realistically winning.

It's amazing that theoretically Get Out and Lady Bird can walk away empty handed even with all those nominations

I think The Color Purple still holds the record for most nominations and zero wins

I think Get Out has a legitimate shot to win Original Screenplay. where being a genre film isn't necessarily a handicap; in fact, I think it will win it. But the bias against genre films is going to really hold it back from an upset win in Best Picture, I think. I do think Lady Bird will be winless, though.

Speaking of bias against entire types of films, I think Lady Bird needs to really be commended for overcoming the Academy's bias against comedies and it's notorious history of snubbing female filmmakers by picking up Best Picture and Best Director nominations. It truly deserves them, it's one of the best comedies I've seen in years, personally.

  18. Fully prepared to watch Hollywood pat themselves on the back for doing the bare minimum in adding diversity to their nominations while continuing to give their honors to white male mediocrity.

I haven't watched Get Out. It's purchased on iTunes and I can watch it any time on my Apple TV, but have just never sat down to watch it. I think a part of me doesn't know if I should go into it as a horror, drama, or comedy (i've heard all three from different people) and I don't want to make the mistake of picking one and then watching it and realize my expectations were wrong.

Definitely not a comedy... some social satire and the protagonist's best friend is the only comic relief. Outside its intended racial and cultural themes, it's more of a suspense thriller.

    So definitely not a horror?

It has horror elements and some dark, dark humor/satire in it, plus one comic relief character who is genuinely funny (the main character's best friend, who isn't in it all that much), but other than that it's mostly a psychological thriller.

the more i think about it, the more i think the preferential balloting system is going to lead to a get out or dunkirk win
