@Garrett L. i just want to say again how incredibly thoughtful and nice your secret Santa gift was. Where did you learn to be so caring and nice?

Relocating to a place with no rain would be ideal. But it would be a sacrifice I would make.

@Garrett L. as a man who balances faith with some progressive political ideals that aren't always known to overlap, do you find it's a struggle to relate to some in your religious community? i have a friend that is also deeply faithful but very supportive of things like trans rights, equal marriage etc and it's been interesting to see her reconcile them both, she catches a lot of flack

I have to say it probably started with my mom. She's amazing. But, I also really hate receiving bad presents (which makes me sound like an ass), so I always stress out on giving good, personalized ones when I can. So a mixture of those two things.

i think it's hard to relate to older people in the faith, for sure. but as a generation, millennials and gen z are pretty progressive. we've grown up in a different world with different pressures and movements and struggles. at the end of the day, i'd rather be known for having a big heart and for standing up for what i believe with grace than any wild stand that could be off putting. if the whole purpose of faith is to spread it, you're not going to ever achieve that with vitriol or exclusion. so i hold myself to a standard of acting and thought (and fail quite often), and hope that people see me as safe. i don't have the answers, but i'm willing to discuss literally anything as long as there can be mutual respect.

Maybe once that wasn't an A1 joke?

I keep kosher and celebrate the Jewish holidays, but I attend a Christian church and small group (and went to a Christian college because we were poor and they gave me a free ride) and greatly prefer Christian worship music (but not Christian music). I don't know. I feel like I don't fit in either because of the other. I was raised in the church, then once Mom discovered our Jewish ancestry around age 9, she really dug into learning more about it.

Man, to see a T-Swizzy encore of Red/All Too Well would be all I want out of her reputation tour, but it's never gonna happen. Still gonna have a blast.

When you write, what do you feel makes your writing "your own" and what do you draw from in your own life to make that possible?

I'm a very precise writer and I take a lot of pride in that. I rarely over-write (actually, I probably under-write for the most part) and always try to be clear and concise. But because of that, I don't think I've discovered my "my writing" feels like yet. I know the rules, and how to break them, but I don't write with the confidence necessary yet. My degree helped a lot with that.

Story wise, for my first novel I delved into my experience as a child of divorce and a roommate of a student-athlete in college to create actual plots. Second novel, my passion for ending modern day sex slavery influenced my plot choice as well. But I don't think I've done a job of telling a story worth reading yet, despite having good and resonating topics.

I think my best writing is when I'm not trying and writing nonfiction, actually. Something like this post is what I'm most proud of. But I'm scared to write a nonfiction book because writing nonfiction means being known and I'm not the best at letting myself be known. Yeah, I write a blog and people read/see it, but mostly people I already have in my life. Not many strangers. And to get a nonfiction book published, you have to prove expertise. And I'm more of a "good at most things but not great at anything" kind of guy.

I was excited to see what sort of questions you'd ask me. :)

I'm driving to the gym and it's an hour of cardio day, so I'd love to come back to a bunch of stuff to answer, but it'll be slower this morning as it'll be on mobile.

I appreciate it. Talking about writing feels a lot like stumbling around in the dark, still. Which is weird for something I want to do.

    Fruit: Watermelon
Veggie: Green beans (I know it’s a legume whatever)

I can’t imagine a world without Cajun fried turkey tbh so they’re ugly as sin but delicious when fried

Chicken salad. But some tuna salads are just as great.
