LOL and it's sad too because I'm actually in general a fan of that sound seeing as I listen to nasty-ass brutal-death metal all the time but like........ Those bands do it on purpose knowing it sounds harsh and bad to make their music sound more harsh and abrasive.

Lars apparently genuinely thought this snare sound was okay, and that makes it fucking inexcusable.

the problem is that the toms and kick sound like cardboard boxes in addition to that snare sound

Lars is annoying, but it gave us this gem for Torben.

goddammit you guys had to go and have a full on conversation about thrash while I'm out in the field all day.....

Slayer hasn't been good for a long time but their brand of thrash definitely opened up the door for death metal.

Sepultura went all nu-metal with Roots and that direction sucks, but Arise and Beneath The Remains are thrash essentials.

Megadeth will always be better than Metallica. Rust In Peace is better than anything Metallica has ever done. That being said Dave Mustaine is a huge asshole.

Anthrax is fun and has a few fun albums but they're pretty meh otherwise.

Kill 'Em All is Metallica's only true thrash album. There's no denying what Master of Puppets did for thrash, but it's their 3rd best album of the 80's, firmly behind Kill 'em All and wayyyy behind Ride The Lightning, which is far and away the best thing they've ever done. I WOULD put And Justice For All in front of Master but the production keeps me from doing so. Songs are better on it tho. Master is like the 4th best thrash album of 1986, which had Darkness Descends, Reign In Blood, and Peace Sells.

Overkill is more fun than all of the Big American 5 anyways. More FUN, not better.

And yes Sodom is better than pretty much any of the American thrash bands. They're the only band out of all of these thrash bands that have remained consistently great, although Decision Day was ehhh.

Code Orange is boring as hell

the thing about dave is that he's outspokenly an asshole but i bet an ungodly amount of people from that time are exactly the same in private

Haha, I get what he's saying, but Lars, Charlie Watts you are not.

That said, I never want to hear the term "Metallica Skinman" ever again.

Metallica are incredible. Megadeth were really good for a few stretches. I hate Slayer. That's my thrash take.

Can't find a good pic but this discussion reminds me of the Mustaine Wrote Em All image which is hilarious.

I had a friend all through middle school who exclusively listened to the Big 4, so maybe that’s why I have such a strong aversion to those bands. I never want to hear Sweating Bullets again in my life.

Personally I think Metallica were/are incredible bar a few miss steps (St Anger/Death Magnetic/LuLu).

Slayer had an incredible 80’s output, a solid start to the 90’s with an iffy end to it. God Hates Us All was an incredible return to form and then since then it’s been average.

Megadeth have some great early albums but haven’t been good for ages and would be a hell of a lot better if Mustain didn’t sound like a gremlin.

Anthrax were much better with Bush than Belladonna but they did have some good material with Belladonna. They’ve always been the weak link in the big 4.

My dad listens to metal. I hated it as a kid. Dont mind it now but I don't seek it out either. I was always into the more punk side of things so that's where his and mine tastes align up otherwise yeah I'm indifferent that's my lukewarm take.

yeah that would turn me off too. That song is from the album they stopped playing thrash on, so shame on your friend lol

I can't speak for Megadeth's later stuff as I haven't listened to anything after Countdown to Extinction, but I pretty much agree with the rest

i dove into some of megadeths post-countdown stuff the other day. i was pretty surprised at how solid dystopia is, but its not that great. endgame is really good i think. so is youthanasia. and i liked the system has failed a decent amount. the rest range from okay to bad.

Megadeth's Endgame eclipses anything the big 4 thrash bands have done for the past 2 decades pretty easily, hell of a record.

That Vektor album is a mammoth of a record. I can see how the length can be off-putting. I honestly rarely go back to it, but it was ranked pretty regularly as the best metal album of 2106.

    hmmm

I can only listen to Slayer and Metallica when I'm in the right mood. But holy shit, do I enjoy them when I'm in that mood.

I don't listen to post-Max Sepultura but Chaos AD is one of the best metal records of all time.

I have no interest in Megadeth.

These are my opinions. Take them or leave them.
