A buddy of mine was gonna take me to see Priest in April, but since Glenn Tipton isn't playing with them we are no longer going. Kinda bummed, but I can see why he no longer wants to pay $80 a ticket.

I got really into them this past fall for whatever reason and that one stood out to me the most

The "S" trilogy of albums by Judas Priest (Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class) are essential. I'm also very partial to Screaming for Vengeance, and Painkiller is obviously one of the best speed metal albums out there!

Actually @sophos34 I may have to join you on this JP deep dive today lol

ive spent the most time with sad wings of destiny so far just because its one of the earliest real metal albums and im really interested in tracing the history of metal right now

They really are a great band. I highly recommend Tipton’s solo records as well.

“Painkiller” the song was a real motherfucker to play on drums in Rock Band

@sophos34 if you’re in the mood for that classic metal sound, the Spirit Adrift record from last year does that sound real well

If you get the chance to pick it up, I HIGHLY recommend this book by Ian Christe. It gives a very thorough overview of the history of the genre. Make sure you get the most recent edition that touches on metal in the Islamic world (iirc it does this - I'm 99.9% sure it says that but I don't remember the exact wording on the front as I don't have my copy near me right now)! It features tons of interviews, absolutely artifact-level magazine clippings and photos, and so on and so forth. It's a long but very engaging read.

you and your buddy are missing out. just sayin'. i know glenn is a large part of priest, but andy sneap is a hell of a replacement for a touring member. i'm excited to see what he brings to the table for them. dude was the creative force behind sabbat (uk) and a hell of a producer.

Concerning the history/growth of metal, this site is pretty fun to mess around with:

damn I just went on a quick little detour to check out some sick death metal albums that will be coming out here in the next month or so:

    Necrophobic (death/black)

Storm Upon The Masses (brutal death)

    Depravity (death)

    Sentient Horror (death)

And some new Skeletal Remains (death)

Maybe I'll convince him. I'm sure he's familiar with Sneap. Not sure why he decided it was a complete no-go after Glenn dropped off.

it has "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" and the oft-debated djent sections on there too so there's definitely some stuff up for debate lol

honestly i think going back and realizing the origins of death metal were in thrash and exploring old metal stuff way more closely than i have before has helped me get perspective on where its coming from
