Great job with your first write ups man!

 

I’m a fan of all their albums and I’d disagree with you too

 

I dunno....the whole album seems fine but there's nothing that grabs me that made me go "I gotta hear that again" like the amazing intro riff of Lungs or the guitar solo bridge leading into "She screams come and get some of this!" part of Sick or Sane.

As someone's first listen, you don't want them to discover something like that first? I know this album is new to everyone, but this user has a chance to experience the best stuff first!

 

In your opinion, and that is fine. As a father myself, it is hard not to appreciate songs like the title track and First Breath, Last Breath.

 

Tracks like “First Breath, Last Breath”, “Elevator To The Gallows” “Shaking Hands” And the title track would beg to differ.


Don’t get me wrong Still Searching is still my favorite album by them but the new one is nothing to sneeze at

Does this album have more to do with Buddy's newborn child ? I only ask because the ending of First Breath, Last Breath was beautiful.

musically I think this album is almost indistinguishable from speak the truth. Which is a-ok because they’re both fun as hell.

Back the Boston pick SO hard.

 

this week i had the pleasure of being paired with and listening to 2 recs from @ugman_2000. we each exchanged a heavier release and a pop album, and i'm happy to report the man chose well.

First up for me was Waves, a 2003 EP by now defunct UK post-hardcore band Mahumodo.

From the first song in I knew this was right in my wheelhouse. I prefer the more melodic side of my heavy music, and this EP delivers the heavy while maintaining elegance in the guitar work and sporadic singing. Some of the guitar work reminds me of From Autumn to Ashes, though I'm sure others could draw parallels to more esoteric hardcore/metal influences. I'm a huge fan of the screams, reminiscent of gravel-y, early Funeral for a Friend-style screaming, which trade off beautifully with more soaring, drawn out cleans. Some of the songs sound not too far removed from early 00s grunge/hard rock, which maintains some accessibility for those not as into this genre. It's only 7 songs, albeit some are long, with one short interlude, but this EP is a quick listen and I strongly recommend to anyone looking for good, accessible post-hardcore.
Recommended songs: April's, *Waves, and *Bythewaters

Next up was a total 180, Lights Out by Ingrid Michaelson

So until i got to the well-known Girls Chase Boys, I didn't realize i'd already heard an Ingrid Michaelson song. To be honest, I really don't like that song. Didn't before and don't now. I also don't care for Warpath. But now that those are out of the way, I can sing the praises of this album because it's really damn good. It's very poppy, which is fine by me to begin with, but maintains some singer-songwriter intimacy (Open Hands) while also showing off some more grandiose flair (Time Machine). You Got Me starts off with some T-Swift-style guitar plucking while One Night Town's woahs wouldn't be out of place on more indie-pop style records. This is a really diverse record sure to have something for everyone while accessible enough to make for a good full listen for someone as picky as myself.
Recommended songs: One Night Town, Open Hands, Home, Handsome Hands

Even in a week(end) filled with the new Pianos and Senses Fail, these recs stuck out. thanks @ugman_2000 !

 

Glad you liked both the recs @js977 If you want some more stuff like Mahumodo the main songwriter in that band went onto to form *Shels who are pretty good too. Also if you've never checked out ISIS's Panopticon then do so as imo that's the gold standard for that type of post-metal stuff.

That also reminds me I need to give the new Piano's album a listen

Brian Fallon
Sleepwalkers
2018



This is the second album that @skurt assigned me for the session (the other being the fantastic new album by Good Tiger which I already wrote about).

As most people here probably know, Brian Fallon is best known for his work with The Gaslight Anthem (lead vocals, rhythm guitar). He has also had some side projects, including his solo work. Sleepwalkers is Brian Fallon's second solo full-length album, following up 2016's Painkillers. I was introduced to The Gaslight Anthem in 2008, shortly after the release of their incredible album The '59 Sound. I enjoyed all of their albums to varying degrees and I was lucky enough to see them live a couple times prior to their 2015 hiatus (earlier this year they announced that they'd be reuniting/ending the hiatus to play several shows). At that time Brian turned his focus primarily to his solo career. I enjoyed his solo debut album, but I didn't find myself returning to it very often. After listening to this album over the past 10 days, I feel confident in saying that Sleepwalkers surpasses Painkillers for me and I know this is an album I'm going to be returning to in the weeks and months to come.

Musically, this album isn't much of a departure from Brian's past solo work or his work in The Gaslight Anthem. I think that Brian's vocals are still spectacular, but I think that the lyrics on this album are really what sets it apart for me. It's hard for me to narrow down my favorite lyrics in an album that's full of great lyrics, but at the end I'll include a small sampling of some of the ones that have stood out to me so far. Some of the songs make me tear up a bit - it's like I'm watching The Notebook all over again.

To this point my favorite tracks have been Forget Me Not, Little Nightmares, Sleepwalkers (I really like the decision to use saxophone for this song), and the closing track See You On The Other Side. If you've ever been a fan of any of Brian Fallon's various projects, I urge you to give this album a listen. It's a special one!
