Alright, finally getting to my second rec as proposed by @Nate_Johnson last week. I swear I'll get better at this. Along with Songs of Praise by Shame, I was also given Wrong Creatures by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I immediately mistook them for Black Label Society, and was slightly disappointed to find that it wasn't actually this guy's band:

    zakk.jpg

So no Zakk Wylde today, maybe in a future rec.

Anyways, I actually enjoyed Wrong Creatures much more than the aforementioned Shame album. The band takes its name from a motorcycle gang in an old Marlon Brando film. Can you blame me for getting them mixed up with a heavy metal band? That's on them for picking a metal name.

The albums begins with an almost tribal feeling with the instrumental "DFF" which left me wondering what I was about to get myself into. However, when the first chords in "Spook" were strummed, I exhaled a sigh of relief. No caveman dancing today. The song brought the rock right away, and this energy is channeled throughout the majority of the album. There are times when the band soars to maximum rock heights (the ending of "Ninth Configuration" comes to mind) and others where they settle back for a steady groove, like the slow and trance-like opening to "Haunt" - which is perfect for hanging out in a smoky bar before the song takes off into a bridge shimmering with energy. There are times when foot-tapping seems mandatory by the listener, like during the intro to "Question of Faith" and others where the band just chills out a little and invites you to do the same.

There are a few minor nitpicks I have. The album feels a little long at 58 minutes, which seems lengthy for a rock album. It drags a little bit towards the back half, most notably in the repetitive "Calling Them All Way" which comes close to the seven minute mark. I could have done without "Circus Bazooko" which sounds exactly like you think. But these are minor things. It's a solid rock album, and something I would point to if someone asked me to show them some straightforward rock. Feels like another driving-with-the-windows-down album.

Highlights: Echo, King of Bones, Little Thing Gone Wild
Lowlights: weird circus organs in Circus Bazooko, trying to make a Tool-length song
RIYL: acting unimpressed during amateur acts at comedy clubs, wearing Aviators, bands not fronted by Zakk Wylde

    American Nightmare:American Nightmare

    I will be listening to:
    The Weakerthans: Reconstruction Site

I’m excited for the person that gets my next recommendation.

  11. Nice review! I actually enjoy Circus Bazooko, as it's a new sound for them on their 8th album. I appreciate that they're still experimenting a bit. Agree that "Calling Them All Away" is by far the weakest track on the album.

Alright for my final rec for this week, I jumped from @JediMasterKevo182 's suggestion of blink-182 straight into another album from my high school years: Louder Now by Taking Back Sunday. Where the former was released during my freshman year, the latter came out the year I graduated (2006). I am getting old.

Speaking of getting old, this album also takes me back. Back to the days of EMO! My dad referred to any music with harsh/growled vocals as emo so he was just as confused as most emo kids were those days. When I think of Taking Back Sunday, I think of eyeliner and bands that are like My Chemical Romance but that aren't actually My Chemical Romance. I think of my high school best friend (we were in a shitty band together) who was bad at singing, which was perfect for covering Taking Back Sunday songs. They are that lipstick/collar band right? You know the one.

The album is a fairly straightforward emo affair. Opener "What's If Feel Like to Be A Ghost?" sets the energetic pace for the rest of the album. I was a bit confused because I mistook "Ghost" for "Girl" on my first listen and felt like I was missing something. Wasn't long before they played a song I recognized with "Makedamnsure" which is probably on every Warped Tour compilation album regardless of year. As with any emo album, there is no lack of dramatic and accusatory lyrics. Everyone is a liar and everything is such a big deal. That's what his album is about and that's what emo is about, right? I won't lie, the vocals kinda grated on me a bit towards the end. Mark and Travis these two guys are not!

Album was fun. Probably won't return to it, but you can bet it will be stuck in my head for a while, especially since I mentioned to my wife that I was writing about this album and now she's been singing TBS all night. Dammit.

Also this is the best thing I found about this album: "AbsolutePunk founder Jason Tate considered the album "closer to Northstar's Pollyanna" than to Where You Want to Be, and said that the music wasn't "anything mind-blowing. I don't get knocked on my ass like I did the first time I heard TAYF, but the catchy repetitiveness is all there."

Who does that guy think he is?

based on the name I was worried this might be like a screamo band but thankfully it wasn't, I enjoyed this overall even though I'm still not sure how I felt about the vocals

standout songs- If All I Thought Was True, Broken Things, The Love Between You And I, Chimes And Churchbells

I say this as a huge fan of SF, a band that's in my top ten, but do not start for the first time with the new album. Do Still Searching or Life is Not a Waiting Room as your first listen, and then go in order til you get to the new one. The new album does not have something like Sick or Sane or Lungs Like Gallows that will capture you right away IMO.

Boston's self titled album from 1976, one of the greatest rock albums of all time. All 8 tracks have been played on the radio as singles, so it's possible that he's already heard them all but not in context of the album.

That's the main difference haha. This new album reminds me more of Speak The Truth than a Senses Fail album.
