Last week I was recommended the record Brutalism by the English band Idles. Having never heard of this band before, my initial thought was that this was going to be something akin to Of Mice and Men, Issues, or some other generic metalcore band. Therefore, I kind of put off giving this a listen right away in an effort to mentally prepare myself for a genre of music I have little to no interest.

However, when I started the album I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with the complete opposite of what I was expecting. Brutalism is a record that features very gruff/rough around the edges vocals on top of a modern take on first wave punk music. There are clear influences like the Clash or even some of the early Oi! music like the U.K. Subs throughout the record, but it should be noted this still has a modern feel to it. This album was a really fun listen and something I probably need to spend more time with for it to fully click, but the early returns so far are promising. The main thing holding me back right now are the vocals. Some of the vocal melodies are not always working for me, but I also understand that is mostly intentional and part of their appeal.

Thank you @Wall Of Arms for an awesome recommendation and unintentionally faking me out with this band. You don’t know how relieved I was when I realized I wasn’t going to be sitting through a by the grid plug and chug record. If there are other English punk bands coming up in the scene that I should know about feel free to give me a list to check out.

Btw @Michael Schmidt now that I have heard Piano Becomes The Teeth, I totally get your comparison of Hawthorne’s There Was A Kid pt 3 to them (especially their older stuff)

Haha yep. La Dispute is another one like Pianos that will have their lyrics arranged as poems a lot and not always feature a traditional chorus or pop structure. A lot of that style in the current wave of bands comes from the '90s emo and screamo scenes with bands like Neil Perry, pg.99, and many others. It's cool because I think the current bands used other influences to make their sound more appealing to a wider audience. More accessible in a good way.

Man, I'm really glad you were surprised by this and ended up enjoying it too! Haha, I would never rec one of those kinda albums, i wouldn't know where to start as I've never been into that genre. So, like I said, super glad you had a surprise with this! As for more bands over here in a similar vein...

...these are a really good start and should keep you busy for a while! And a few more from over here whilst I have @Nate_Johnson as I know he's been enjoying delving in lately: Bloody Knees, LIFE, YOWL, Eagulls. Incoming teasers:

    Good Tiger
    We Will All Be Gone
    2018

@skurt and I exchanged two albums for this session and here's my write-up for one of them (next one coming on Monday).

I had heard of Good Tiger before, but had never checked out their music and was completely unfamiliar with them other than seeing their name in passing. I'd seen some discussion on this album in the past week (it was just released last Friday) so I added it to my "2018 Albums To Listen To" playlist (which is growing longer by the day). When it was assigned to me, I bumped it up to the top of the list. I'm really thankful for Chorus (and @skurt), otherwise I most likely wouldn't have discovered this awesome album.

Good Tiger is a supergroup of sorts (consists of former members of the groups Tesseract, The Faceless, and The Safety Fire). I had heard of Tesseract and The Faceless, but had never listened to either group. I also found that We Will All Be Gone is this band's second full-length release.

Musically, this album is fantastic. It's somewhere in the progressive metal/post-hardcore spectrum and the songs are very catchy and at the same time, very intricate. Vocally, the album is reminiscent of Anthony Green's vocals in Circa Survive and Cedric Bixler-Zavala's vocals in The Mars Volta. The vocals are sung and typically higher pitched. Vocally, this album is very impressive and it's hard to say whether the music or the vocals is the strength of the album. Both compliment the other very nicely.

This is absolutely an album that I'll be returning to and a very early contender to be on my year end list (I realize that it's only the middle of February). My favorite tracks so far are Float On, Salt of the Earth, Nineteen Grams, and I'll Finish This Book Later. One more thing that I'll say about this album - I love that no two tracks sound the same. It's an unpredictable album and it makes for a very fun, enjoyable experience. I'd urge any fans of progressive metal, post-hardcore, Circa Survive, or The Mars Volta to give this album a listen. It's a short album at only 10 tracks (including a short instrumental track) and 37 minutes long. The album doesn't even feel like it's that long. I really love the album art too!

Thank you to @skurt for assigning this album to me! I really don't have enough good things to say about this album. It's awesome to see this album being recommended to others and it's very likely an album that I'll be recommending to others in future sessions.

    Sleekest of beaks. So Good.

Great write-up bachna. My favourites are The Devil Thinks I'm Sinking, Salt of The Earth, Float On and Grip Shoes. That instrumental track was a nice surprise and transitions to I'll Finish This Book Later so well. The first album is definitely worth checking out when you got time.

I first heard of these guys when they were announced as openers for my date of Protest The Hero Fortress 10 Year Tour and this first song I heard was Devil and it gripped me instantly. I love a good build-up, really great song to open the record. Curious to see how solid of a live act they are.
