It keeps him calmer. The best thing for him and his non-stop barking when we left was his ability to break out of the crate. He would bark non-stop in the crate and I'd find saliva on the ground at the edge of the crate and on the bars, so he was clearly freaking out. But at the same time we got the CBD, he learned how to open the door haha. So it's hard to say because he's too damn smart. Now, he barks when I first leave and will jump up on the window sill and scratch at the door a little, but seems to calm down shortly after. The problem is that he has destroyed our blinds and now watches out the window and will bark at anything passing by. But at least it keeps him entertained I guess haha.

We were told that using the crate as punishment is a bad idea because the dog will start to have negative feelings associated with the crate. So when he misbehaves, we stop playing/giving any attention and when he behaves properly, he gets treats nonstop. It's really made a difference. I'm ready to throw the crate out to be honest, I hate it almost as much as the dog does and he clearly doesn't need it since he does nothing that bad when we leave. There's just a few behaviors we need to correct.

The barking when you leave is the worst. It hurts my heart to hear him bark, but letting him go free has made a big difference. No complaints from the neighbors since he's been running around loose. Granted, he's much older than Bear. Try some treats and see if they help!

No, she's too young right now for that. you're supposed to crate them at most 1 hour for every month old they are. They're not supposed to potty in their kennel since that's their bed, you want to teach that if they're in there they need to hold it. Since she's only 2 months the longest I could crate her would be 2 hours. I work from 8-5pm m-f and take my lunch at 1pm. I bought an exercise pen for her and it attaches to her kennel door so she has a place to potty if she needs to. i have hardwood floors in my living room so clean up is not a problem. She has her toys and a potty pad in the pen and can access her kennel if she wants to sleep in there. I put her favorite toy, Ms. Elephant, in her kennel and hide treats under her blanket for her to find so she associates the kennel with good things. Once she gets old enough that she can last 5-6 hours of holding it, I will start leaving her in her crate when I leave for work.

I'll look into it, thanks! I was doing the same thing you are, where you ignore them for a bit until they calm down, but she isn't picking up on it. I googled it and a lot of places were saying if they don't respond to you ignoring them, then the next option is time out as long as it's not for very long.

I wish she didn't have to have a crate, too, but she's part border collie and they'll create their own mental and physical stimulation if you give them an opportunity too haha. So, in order for me to protect my cabinets, hardwood, blinds, and furniture from getting torn up and ruined down the road, she'll have to stay crated for her safety and my benefit. There's a dog park across the street from me so we'll have plenty of opportunity to exercise and play when I can be around her, but when I'm not she'll have to stay put up for a couple hours. As I start to figure out my finances, budget, and spending habits with this new job and typical expenses here in CO, I might look into budgeting a day or two during the work week for her to go to doggy daycare when she's a bit older.

Ah, the timeout makes a lot more sense then! I think for us especially, having a dog who has had a really difficult life prior to our rescuing him, all that time he spent in crates/cages must have been traumatizing, so I think he feels a massive amount of relief by not being in one.

Give the treats a try! I think it might be beneficial. They're relatively local to you anyway!

We're looking into the doggy daycare too! I think a day or two a week will be really beneficial to keeping him tired, socialized, and happy.

also, for those of you looking into older dogs for your apartment, see if there's a greyhound rescue in your area. These rescues take in greyhound racing dogs after they are "retired" from racing and they make amazing apartment dogs from what I've researched. They were my second choice of dog after Bear if I wasn't able to get her. They're referred to as the "40mph couch potatoes" because they're fast, but extremely lazy and chill after retirement.

They've spent almost their whole life running races, come trained already, and just want to chill out the rest of their life so there's minimal work on your end compared to a pup.
