Did we talk about how one of the most climatic scenes in the movie is scored to Monsters of Folk yet?! I was hyped.

I forget exactly, I think it's around when Woody's character makes his choice..

The song is "His Master's Voice" took me a second to pin it during the movie, but I was pumped when I recognized it.

I'm about at the point where if people are still going to waste their time talking about this thing I'm going to not waste my time on them. Like, it's not great but it's nowhere near bad enough to justify all the homogenous, cookie cutter, unoriginal hate takes it's getting. Plus, the gleeful nature of it all is exhausting, I've never seen so much joy being taken in dunking on something so mediocre. The perverse pleasure hating on it generates in people also really distracts from the very real criticism the film deserves for it's handling of race and other important social issues. I don't know, for me it wasn't fun or interesting the first time and it remains not fun or interesting the 1,000th time.

I'm all for people not wasting their time on things they don't like, but I also believe there is good, justified criticisms that are being directed at this film, especially approaching the problematic aspects of the film. I don't think we should just let something like this slide by, especially when it is garnering wild acclaim.

I just don't want to hear people mindlessly parroting talking points for cheap laughs anymore, is what I mean. I'm all for thoughtful, well-written thinkpieces/videos/podcasts/whatever else, especially and specifically by people of color, dissecting the very real problems the film has. I think the people taking some kind of perverse pleasure in "taking down Three Billboards" aren't helping, is all.

Until all those thoughtful pieces by critics of color get lumped with “backlash” or “taking down Three Billboards” by people who think the movie doesn’t deserve as much hate as it gets.

Not saying that’s anyone here, I’ve just seen that happen to critics I follow.

I can't speak for anyone else, but, personally, when I talk about "backlash," I try to make clear that I'm talking about a very specific kind of criticism that is being done just to dogpile without any motivation beyond agreeing with the crowd. People who are in it just to take the movie down, not because they have something legitimately insightful or original to say. It just gets hard to parse through all the noise to find the voices we should be championing when the internet is clogged full of me-too hate takes that don't add anything of substance to the discussion.

Just saw this... loved it! Not the best or anything, but I loved the vibe of the movie, even with some of its issues.

The obsession to find some alternative motive to someone's opinion on a film is so confusing.

It is a product that people pay money and spend time viewing, so they should be encouraged to share their view, whether they loved it or hated it or somewhere in between. Of course people are going to say similar things; everyone watched the same movie. The film gets more criticism because it is an Oscar nominee; in a perfect world, the Oscars would not exist and we would not have to see these films elevated to things they are not.

Its hype started with the success at TIFF

Which is one of the things that feeds into the Oscars. It sometimes feels like it is yearlong.

True but a lot of the comments coming out of those festivals are tiered towards the Oscars. See: Adam Sandler getting Oscar buzz in February or whatever.

I first watched it drunk so in retrospect, much of it was lazy and occasionally absolutely absurd (the convenient "hope you get ___" being the most egregious example) but I agree with the closing statement in this video in that the intent was not a redemptive arc but rather a mutual bottoming out.

No interest in defending the film further (don't @ me) as its flaws are well documented and very obvious, but I'm not ready to say it's as morally irresponsible as some.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's late and I need to re-watch and re-evaluate my opinions, but although I think this movie is kind of messy and unnecessarily vulgar sometimes, I thought it was a powerful movie and enjoyed it a lot.

I enjoyed this film, although I'd rank it third in Martin McDonagh's catalog behind In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. I thought Woody's letters were hysterical.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. All of the performances was great, even if Rockwell was a cartoon at times. It was still entertaining watch him be a piece of shit. One of the darkest comedies I've seen in a while.

Aside from the very valid criticisms about this film's social stance, it's just a poorly written story. A lot of half-copped ideas (no pun intended) that don't add-up to, nor even draw lines toward an earned conclusion. It's like McDonagh came up with the characters first without much of a plan, and threw together a story around them.

We live in the age of people parroting underthought talking points so they can feel a sense of belonging to the 'right' group. It's an easy way for an ego boost and the feeling of being smart without actually having to think for yourself.
