Should have made another record with Butch Walker.

First impressions are that I'm glad to have them back, and I enjoy this, but it's not on the level of Alter the Ending. I also think I would have rather gotten another Twin Forks record.

 

Is "We Fight" the best song on here?

 

That or the closing track.

Yup. This album desperately misses Butch Walker.

 

I feel like he would have really grounded some of the pop elements without losing what makes Dashboard Dashboard. Instead, a lot of the poppier songs just strike me as vaguely annoying.

 

Yup. Agreed. It feels like a lot of these synth/pop songs bury DC’s soul and it’s screaming to breakthrough the pop BS.

I would love to hear stripped down versions of these songs.

 

Damn I was really enjoying that podcast, but it suddenly got cut off right after the story about Stolen at "fan's" wedding.

 

Stolen (the slow version) is going to be the first dance song at my wedding. My Fiancée loves it.

 

From the clips I’ve heard, I doubt this will be one of my favorite DC records.

 

Listened to this most of the day. Drove along the beach blasting it too. It was fitting for the moment and made me appreciate it more, but I'm still overwhelmed by the pop elements in some of these songs.

 

It’s .... not good. The more I think and talk about it with people the more I have to admit it’s just a bland and boring album.

 

Some of the synth stuff on this reminds me of certain production aspects of Penny Black that I’d rather not revisit.

I'm thinking a 4-5 song EP was the way to go with this. Or, you know, go into the studio with Butch and write another 5-6 great songs.

 

Lol I know... I hear it too. Also the vocal delivery and melodies are similar to that one. I think penny black would have been good with better production. This I’m not sure haha.

But I think Craig nailed it on the head 4-5 song ep would have been great. Maybe I’ll cut some fat and make it that way for me. Which is weird bc I literally NEVER do that

 

Yeah our talk earlier about this made me realize how much I’m bugged about it.

 

Yeah this album would be lucky to be called OK. Totally forgettable :(

But yeah, I agree. Carrabba produced Penny Black himself, right? Or am I misremembering that? If so, that was a big issue for me with that record. It was so...muddy? Half the time it sounded like I was listening to Chris singing underwater, like his vocals were at 128kbps and it sounded tinny and I get that feeling a lot here. Kind of bummed out on this thing.

 

Please don't ever stop pointing out the lack of Butch Walker's influence. Maybe Chris will catch on haha.

 

There’s no cohesiveness to the record either. Like i get pushing your sound but it almost sounds like a mixtape.

 

Yup. Penny Black's production was so jarringly bad. I jammed the album in my car the other evening and had to turn it off by the 3rd song cause the quality was so off putting and started hurting my ears lol
