Ah I see. We're going to have to agree to disagree on Noah vs David then. As much as it pains me to say Noah was my biggest disappointment of 2017. And I'd say maybe give Caroline Spence another go, "You Don't Look so Good (Cocaine)" was one of my favorite songs of the year.

 

Noah was definitely a disappointment for me. We talked about that on the podcast a bit too. But even given that, I still absolutely love eight of the songs on that record. David released his best and most cohesive record, I think, but there were more standouts for me on Fables. I think his next record is where he's really going to knock it out of the park.

I've been meaning to go back to Caroline Spence. I liked her previous record, too, even though it didn't make my 2015 list.

 

positively surprised at how high LLL is placed and kinda bummed (but not surprised) that Good Nature didn't make it. i know a lot of people think it's boring and one-note, but i couldn't have asked for a better follow-up, musically and thematically, to PV.

also i gave Circa over ten spins and it just didn't click. only heard two other albums by them and it took me a while to like them as well, so maybe this one will too grow on me over time.

great list overall. as a chorus/AP user for around a decade now, it's been fun to see the EOTY lists get more inclusive and the write-ups become more informative, touching on broader, more substantial aspects of society. i kinda see myself represented by this evolution on both music taste and worldview, and hope we can all keep growing.

finally, gonna rep my favorite brazilian music of 2017. give it a listen. give other non-english-speaking artists a listen.

No Portugal. The Man, love I see. I wouldn't say Woodstock is much different than their past releases, yet I thought many people loved them here.

I didn't include them because they completely blew up and were unfortunately "played out". Similar reasons for omission?

Also I heard Manchester Orchestra being played in the airplane yesterday as I was boarding. My friend said he also read an article about them in USA Today. Latest band to breakout?

@grimis16 I loved "Woodstock" actually, though it wasn't as important to me to be in my TOP 30, maybe I even forgot about it a little bit, and it should be there somewhere - though I only focus hard on my TOP 10 choices (still changing the order a bit hah). And yeah, just like @ComedownMachine said, it's very similar to Evil Friends only, obviously not to any other of their previous albums.

I hope Casey Bates have them on his podcast one day - he talked about the album just a bit on Noise Creators, and it seemed hilarious at some points.

Yeah, I like this and I'm shocked. It's almost like a love letter to late 90's/early 2000's alternative rock and pop. Definitely get some Third Eye Blind vibes. Thanks for the recommendation!

 

Yeah just a glaring omission since I thought they were well liked on this site.

Overall though, I've discovered way more bands through user submissions than staff picks. Maybe it's because the staff provides the news and I learn bands through the news, but I think it has more to do with user submissions are more independent and varied. Bands I've either had second listens or discovered from other users that I enjoyed:

Los Campesinos, Oso Oso, Rozwell Kid, Caracara, Dryjacket, Cende, Gang Of Youths, Movements, Prawn, Remo Drive, Slaughter Beach Dog, Smith Street Band. Also, how has Hippo Campus been completely ignored?

 

Craig, I love how to reordered your 2007 list. Pretty awesome. I think I need to look back at mine now...funny thing is that's when I started making my top ten lists. I don't have them in order but was mine 10 years ago:

Anberlin - Cities, Broadway Calls - S/T, Cassino - Sounds of Salvation, Fare You Well - Sounds like a serenade, Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre, Dear Hunter - Act II, Gaslight Anthem - Sink or Swim, Honorary Title - Scream and Light Up the Sky, the Hoodies - A Place on Solid Ground, Weatherbox - American Art

I still listen to the albums from Cassino, Gaslight, Honorary Title and Weatherbox on the regular. Still happy with that list.

I started doing that a couple years back, when I started doing a bunch of retrospective write ups and wanted those albums represented on my lists. It’s fun! I don’t know if I can find my original lists from a lot of those years, because they were on blogs, sites, or social networks that don’t exist anymore. But I know generally in my head how I ranked things back then.

 

@grimis16 I didn't know who Hippo Campus are, just listened to the album - pretty fun! Other than that, a lot of what you've mentioned above is in my TOP 30.

 

Nice to see Brand New left off. I thought that album was very very bad.

I mean I have in a way, I won't say that their my favorite group anymore or even want to see them live now, but that record came at a good time for me and just kinda consumed my time more than any other album this year.

 

Lots of surprises both good and bad on here! Kesha? Ew. But very pleased to see Tyler, the Creator get some love, that album is flawless. AMITW released my favorite of the year, and So Close has the best lyrics of any song of 2017. :)
