to me, the first four songs on the album are the best, with "escape plan" possibly being my favorite. then guardian and windows, then the rest of the album.

the whole thing really is so good though.

I like the little guitar solo on blurry vision, so simple but that little stop is set up really nicely

"Happiest when you're alone." And to me that was kinda the point. When you have someone you care about that would rather be alone, it sucks, I guess the way it feels somber in the song made me enjoy it and relate.

Yeah I take it back... listened to this again today and you know what? This whole dang record is just really good. That's my final opinion lol.

My favorite thing about "Favorite" is the drums. Fun fact: several years ago I wrote a novel about a band and had a hard time pinning down a real-world equivalent to their sound. This album, especially the first four songs, really almost nails it.

Okay this might be a stupid question but I know like next to nothing about the creation and production of music, so... Here goes. Can anyone tell me what it is about this record that makes it sound like..."deep," for lack of a better word? Like...the songs sound "spacious," if that makes sense? Each instrument and voice has plenty of room and you can hear each clearly... I don't know, I'm probably not making ana sense but was just wondering if it had something to do with the recording of it, or the production, or just the band itself....?

My full understanding if no one can answer this crazy question.

The sense of space a record has is entirely dependent on the recording and mixing. A good mix puts every element in its own space and is clean.

Natural reverb? Studio 4 looks like it's got big wide open rooms, though I don't know if they recorded the parts live or not so idk. Either way, I suppose the answer is still reverb?

NVM ignore me a better answer was given

Depth in a mix is achieved with reverb and or delay. Yip probably uses really good room mics to capture the reverb of the room and the room is treated acoustically to sound a certain way

That could be solid use of panning and layering things. I love the acoustic guitar in escape plan how it bounces from speaker to speaker..

I actually think there’s a bit too much low end on this tho, that could be the masters

@sophos34 do you know if yip masters his own records? I am too lazy to look it up

I think he does but i think almost all yip records have too much low and low mids and are therefore really muddy, and it's not the mastering that's to blame although it certainly could be fixed a little with different mastering but the tones of the bands he works with are often really muddy themselves

we are mostly all music nerds who sit around and think about this stuff way more than we should haha. Oh and @sophos34 went to college for this stuff so hes pretty much GOAT when it comes to this information. I swear he must have notifcations set or something any time a mixing question comes up he jumps right on it haha
