    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

@Greg @Dodge725 Finished the Legend of Luke Skywalker book. I ended up not reading the 4th and 5th story, so maybe thats affecting my overall opinion which is that I loved it.

    - The overall story of the deckhands going to Canto Bight was just whatever. Didnt really care at all.

-The 1st story actually made me pretty legit mad and ended up skimming it. Luke Codplotter, Benny "Wiseman" O'Kenoby, Hansel Shooter, Chewie Baccarat? Yeah fuck you book. The end where Luke shows up and his reaction at least made it worth it.

    - 2nd story I really liked. Cool to see an Imperial perspective of Luke and especially on Jakku. (gives some more meaning to him to Rey: "yeah okay that really is nowhere"). The intro to which, (even though its a legend) was the kind of stuff people wanted to see out of Luke and was just really fun to read. I get its a legend and they go out of their way to discredit the story but Luke using force lightening only 1 year after the Battle of Endor is an interesting thing to think about.
    - Im skipping the third for last. The 6th story was a really weird one, but I had a lot of fun with it. Really loved how this story affected Luke and how it tied back to Obi-Wan and what would happen going forward. I’d say it’s a huge aspect of understanding the end of TLJ and Force Ghosts.

    - 3rd was far and away my favorite and was really worth the price of the book for me. I loved the planet of Lew'el, Aya, the tribe, and their mythology. I loved the story of Luke going through these challenges. I woudve enjoyed an entire TV mini series on this island with this story. The Tide, what Luke learned and how he learned it was put together so well. Not trying to bend the Force to your own will and letting nature, or the Force, or "the Tide" play out is something that I think plays a big role in Luke's decision to stay on the island in TLJ and from what Ive read the 3rd lesson he gives Rey in the deleted scenes.

Although short, I think this story added a lot to the understanding of the Force and for @FlayedManOfSF, kind of bolstered my own interpretation of the Force. Another common theme of Star Wars is perspective and seeing all these perspectives of the Force with The Tide and the Mist really added a lot of depth to the mythology of the universe. The Force is portrayed as a religion or just a set of beliefs itself just like the Tide and the Mist, and not this universally known dogma which I loved. I really appreciate Lucasfilm and the writers for taking this direction in the Force. This has been a common theme in Rebels, the books, and now in TLJ and hope they keep expanding it going forward.

As far as Luke goes, this is the Luke that Mark and most of the fans that hated TLJ wanted to see in The Last Jedi. Positive, seeking knowledge, single handedly facing Star Destroyers, helping out, saving people, and lifting up their spirits when they lose hope. I'll admit it was undoubtedly nice to see Luke in this kind of light again and seeing who he was after ROTJ. I loved his character throughout these stories and Ill admit it does suck we couldn't have seen this Luke in the new movies. For what TFA established though, I still love what Rian did with Luke and and think it was more important from a thematic standpoint.

I get that these are legends and not canon things that for sure happened and people are going to say whats the point then? But thats one of the themes of this. What the symbols are saying are more important than the symbols themselves and getting attached to concrete knowledge. I dont think we need to discredit the book for not being "canon" just like people shouldnt discredit Star Wars or any fiction for not being "truth".

Idk where to post this but it is more general and this is thread is all of SW. Im growing jaded of this Star Wars war. Really just fandom in general and how people talk about movies and art. Marvel, DCEU, etc... Really thats always bothered me and really reflects on me more than anything. By letting it affect me I give it power, I know, but the arguments over The Last Jedi, now Solo, and even the MCU vs. DCEU. DC fans getting groups to downvote Black Panther. It just bums me out man. Its stupid arguments about meaningless shit in the grand scope of things, but I think thats why it bums me out. That people (from both sides) can be so furious and at war with each other over something so trivial.

Maybe its just me but I feel like Rian Johnson is getting sick of all this shit as well. Just in the way he words his responses it sounds like hes being attacked and just seems less happy about Star Wars.

Sometimes I think social media is really adulterating art. Just in the way the brain works I think its really hard for an artist to not be affecting by things that are being said, especially the incessant and sensationalized amount that it comes in. It affects the art that is created. It plays into whatever natural creativity is running through them. By entertaining these types of things in the amounts they do its impossible that it doesnt play a role in the creations going forward.

Sorry. Just in a mood. stepping off pedestal. Going to bed.

It is exhausting and a bummer. The thing I think that bothers me the most with regards to SW is just how black and white everyone seems to be taking these stories lately.
It’s funny because SW is basically Greek tragedy and a fairytale set in space. Of course, our real world informs the SW universe, but it’s not meant to be taken literally and I see all of these takes, like on buzzfeed and Twitter, and I genuinely don’t understand it ha. It’s fantasy and unrealistic and that’s why SW is so compelling and fun. Most people seem to be taking the cynical side of things (oh Solo is definitely going to be bad even though we haven’t seen anything — it could be, but we won’t know until May really or oh the Skywalker saga is going to end with the last Skywalker just staying evil and getting his head chopped off by Rey). I think people need to chill ha.
I recommend you check out that IMAX Q&A from a few nights ago with Rian. He doesn’t seem hurt at all by the negativity and he is an absolute sweetheart to everyone who asks a question. I think we all really lucked out with having him in the SW universe.

Yea admittedly I saw one question from that which he was defending Han not having a funeral and just kind of seemed defensive. Unfair to say what i said. I don’t know him. Thank you for posting that btw I will probably get to it today. I love Collider so I’ve been looking forward to that interview.

The ironic thing is about your comment about black and white and Rian is that one of the main themes of HIS movie is that everything isn’t black and white and in both sides of anything there is good and bad. That’s one of the big reasons TLJ is my favorite. Yet his movie has caused (or maybe exposed) more black and white viewpoints. Even if people are cordial at first conversations seem to always turn to arguments and opinions get perverted into dogma.

Even though I agree with you that it is fantasy and supposed to be an escape and to not take it so seriously I love Star Wars because it’s more than that. It challenges us and gives us lessons. The dualism of the Force is such an important concept in life. All the messages these symbols of this fictional mythology is pointing to are great.

Yet just like religion people are so attached to the symbols themselves and not what they represent. And just like religion people go to war when those symbols are changed or questioned. Fandom is becoming a religion just like politics and everything turns into a war.

I just wish the ones who perpetuate this hate who are obviously passionate fans actually took the messages from Star Wars and used them.

As you said though I’m so blessed Rian Johnson being in Star Wars. Even though it’s created a division between a lot of fans, and even though I think the movie could’ve been handled better, he understands the spirit of Star Wars more than most and he actually expanded what Star Wars can be in the future, rather than just a crowd pleasing, by the numbers fantasy action adventure film.

Oh yeah, I totally agree that is does have deeper meanings to it sorry I didn’t mean to come across that way ha. I’m really happy to be not the only one feeling this way ha.
You can pull so much from these movies/books/tv shows such as fear of loss can push someone into fascism and how a villain can find their humanity through compassion. It’s not all realistic, but that’s why it’s so intriguing.
Interesting that you thought he came across defensive. The imax thing is an awesome listen tho.

It was kind of the twitter stuff, and then in that interview answering the question about Han having a funeral he was saying like Luke grieved Obi-Wan for 2 seconds and Leia didnt grieve Alderaan and stuff. "defensive" may have been a poor word choice since that conveys a sense of anger.. Just defending his decisions i guess. Im probably just projecting my own frustrations with fans onto him because if I was him id be frustrated. Probably wouldnt be able to handle it as well as him honestly. As Ive said before Im just hoping it doesnt affect his art or decisions for this next trilogy.

I'm surprised it's not for the TV series they announced with the Rian Johnson trilogy. Regardless, I'm very excited for this next phase of Star Wars, after the final stand alone in 2020. Hopefully Disney sticks with it's hired talent this time around.

So uh are we gonna just have two "main" Star Wars series that alternate a release each year? That's not going to be overkill or anything...

I am a little disappointed that this next phase is again being spearheaded by white men. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly happy with the creative names announced, but they've been giving a lot of lip service to putting women and POC behind the camera and we haven't seen them live up to that yet. Granted, Rian is only directing the first movie in his trilogy and there are no directors attached to this yet, so hopefully some diversity is on the way.

It was an attempt at a joke about their controversial CONFEDERATE series.

    My shame is laid bare.

i think 8 movies in the pot is a lot from a business perspective and am very curious to see where the drawing power goes when there are 2-3 trilogies going on top of the next "Story" after Solo. as a fan i'm pumped.

This is true. I'm kind of hoping for stand alone movies, but with connected themes.

Pretty sure I just snagged some new Black Series before they were supposed to be released. High five for apathetic Walmart employees.
