First listen, not catching me as much as his best stuff

But also- I think all the singles are bangers now so maybe my whole view will change

3.8 is insanely low for this

  4. This seems like an album that could catch on way more with listeners than critics.

I feel like for whatever reason, certain artists reach a point where people are ready to trash them. I felt these reviews coming before the first single even came out

Definitely underwhelmed on first listen but there's moments here that I love too. I need to spend more time with it but it's not evoking what I was hoping.

That review had some decent points, but the bookend paragraphs are so overblown and revisionist that it’s hard for me not to roll my eyes at the whole thing. Pitchfork played a huge role in building up Timberlake’s “hubris,” and no Album is bad enough to “relitigate” past triumphs.

    Worst part, so childish.

There were definitely a few stand out tracks to me on the album, my favorite being the closer, 'Young Man'. I'm curious how often I will be drawn to return to this.

Timberlake is really not a good lyricist, though. Th
I think the piece on The Ringer makes a lot of the same points in a more honest and less hyperbolic fashion. Basically, it's that 1) Timberlake is not a very good lyricist, and 2) Timberlake is at odds with an era where we expect pop artists to be political, outspoken, and "woke."

I think my main gripe with it is that he seems to have capitalised on an aspect that made me skip certain songs from 20/20 which is running a refrain, musical element or hook so hard into the ground that in the space of 5 minutes it goes from being catchy to annoyingly boring and makes me want to hit skip. "Wave" and on further listens "Sauce" are particularly guilty of this. I know it can be a cop out to say "songs are too long" but when they aren't offering something new and legit just repeating something to detrimental effect, it's the biggest criticism I have.

"Man Of The Woods" also legit sounds like "kids go country-pop". I swear it would it on my niece's CDs that entertain her on car journeys.

I love the first three singles so much still though and want to spend more time with it. But it's frustrating as a big fan to not be exhilarated by a new JT album as I'd hoped to be.

Only liked maybe 3/4 songs, didn’t care for the rest at all. I’ll revisit it down the road, though, and see if that or my mood changes.

Just echoing what others have said, this feels underwhelming on first listen.

There is probably a 10-track version of this album that is very good. I'm going to play around with that.

I enjoy "Montana", that synth bass bubblin' underneath is great with the shiny high synths on top. "Breeze Off The Pond" is really cool too but the verse vocal melodies remind me so much of this:

gonna just agree with this. i almost wish that 10 of these songs got as much attention as all 16 of these songs did combined.

Personally I'd go as far as saying a 12-track album, but I agree with the general premise for sure.
