I have a bunch of deaths discog but haven't spent time with it. Same with gorguts but I do like what I've heard. Something about death metal is just so....aesthetically displeasing and I can't really pin point what but I'm sure the right bands will help me come around

Man I love death metal. That and thrash are my two favorite genres. Maybe try death metal with a bit more prog/tech influence? Something that retains the death metal sound with a bit of other elements to keep it from being just straight OSDM.

Here's some death with jazz/prog influences:

Death when they started to get more progressive:

This is more death than either of the other two, but it's got some weird sci-fi vibes:

Edit: ok the Nocturnus rec is still way too death-y but they kick ass so w/e

Death is great. Give them a shot. The guitar work alone should draw you in.

I didn’t give his year end post a hard look and I usually do. I need to go back and see what was on there. Glad that record was.

Yeah, I get that. I have a harder time getting into like, Cannibal Corpse, from even an aesthetic perspective. But yeah later Death material is a good place to start, and you might be really into the Carcass reunion record from a few years back

lol I had no idea he responded to that review. that's just embarrassing. I have a hard time believing Robb is new to bad reviews, especially with their nu-metal phase that everyone always talks about with Machine Head, even before anyone had any kind of inkling what this new record was gonna sound like.

but yeah, this wave of whiny, drooling alt-right douchebags whining about metal getting "political" clearly have no fucking clue what they're talking about. metal has been political since black sabbath invented it and wrote songs like "war pigs" and "hand of doom". i mean for fucksake.

i get the feeling these are all the aggro white brodudes who discovered metal via their nu-metal phase in middle school and never outgrew that genre's knuckle-dragging stupidity and territorial hostility. it's just metastasized into hatred for people based on their race or gender identity or nationality rather than just hating them for being "preps" or "jocks" or whatever dumb shit tripp pants clad korn fans got mad about in 2002.

I never understand the hand wringing at politics in metal. Like a good chunk of the greatest bands and albums in the genre has some political leaning to them, you have to be a total idiot or a fool to miss that memo.

Beyond that, I’m really tired of this tough guy/“woke” xenophobic bullshit act some of these asswipes try to live by. Like cool, you hate religion but you want to be as homophobic as devout religious people you hate. You hate the government but you want to kick out foreigners out of your country. You hate rapists but you want to demean women and oppress them. Like fuck those people, they deserve to be called out for their bullshit and shunned.

this is definitely the trend with these clowns, unfortunately. good thing is though that more and more bands are speaking up now and saying these kind of people aren't welcome at their shows and dragging them on social media when some pepe dork tries to start shit.

it really does boggle my mind that so many people evidently missed the long, storied history of metal being political. christ, the big four of thrash were ALL political, to varying degrees. Metallica were political from the jump, and they're the most commercially successful metal band ever.

    but does it djent?

I've always found it really hard to get into black metal. I may just be picky when it comes down to it. The only black metal bands I can really get into are Immortal, Dark Throne, Carach Angren, Dimmu Borgir, Carpathian Forest, and Twilight Ophera. If you want to count Behemoth too.

As for djent and progressive stuff, I am such a huge fan of AAL and The Contortionist. Used to jam Vildhjarta hard. Instrumental stuff can get boring so I see that argument fairly, but I enjoy it if I'm just out driving at night or relaxing. As a musician too I can really appreciate the musicianship that some of them bring to the table.

That's probably my favorite part of this thread, we'll still discuss shit whether it's good or bad. We generally avoid fanboyism and are tolerant of other stuff. Minimal to no elitism. (And thankfully there's separate threads for black metal...the suckiest kind of metal)

For example, before this thread I never listened to any doom, could not dig it. Then someone posted some tracks from Indian and my life changed forever haha. Someone mentioned khemmis earlier which is another band I would not have known of without this thread. So damn good.

Now that January is over, I can take a look at the albums that were released last month that I managed to listen to:

    1. Summoning - With Doom We Come
    2. Hooded Menace - Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed
    3. Panphage - Jord
    4. Hamferd - Tamsins Likam
    5. Heidevolk - Vuur Van Verzet
    6. Leaves' Eyes - Sign of the Dragonhead
    7. Chemicaust - Unleashed Upon This World
    8. Corrosion of Conformity - No Cross No Crown
    9. Pillars - Abandoned
    10. Bind Torture Kill - Visceres
    11. Funeral Winds - Sinister Creed
    12. Archaic Tomb - Congregations for Ancient Rituals (Demo)
    13. Tribulation - Down Below
    14. Agrimonia - Awaken
    15. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs
    16. Ulvegr - Vargkult
    17. Ectoplasma - Cavern of Foul Unbeings
    18. Portal - Ion

I try to listen to stuff outside of my normal interests/preferred genres, hence stuff like Hamferd, Leaves' Eyes, and Pillars being on the list. Standouts include Hooded Menace, Tribulation, and Chemicaust. I need more time with Agrimonia and Portal but initial listens for each were definitely enjoyable, just need to absorb them more (Portal especially).

It was ok. I'm not really a fan of the band or the style so I'm probably not the best person to ask but nothing stuck with me.

My music listening has been a bit to all over the place to make any informed prognostications about music that came out during the first month of the year, but here are some high-level thoughts:

-The new Mammoth Grinder is AWESOME, but just a step below Underworlds. Ryan Parrish's drumming on it annoys me a bit at times because there are a few passages where his overly simplistic style detracts from the song. It's a fact that saddens me a bit because I've always been a fan of his drumming style going back to when I first heard him play on Hidden Hands... with Darkest Hour. The re-recorded tracks on it that were written by their old drummer (or Chris himself? I dunno) song a lot better. A few d-beat passages here and there could have really amped things up a bit.

-The new Tribulation and Agrimonia records both have top 15/20/25 for the year potential for me. Just need to take a deeper dive and listen to them more. The new Portal isn't my speed, but the technicality and atmosphere they bring to their music is appreciated.

-I'm not going to discuss Machine Head anymore in this thread because I don't want to be beating a dead horse lambasting it at this point.

-Solid demos from Battering Ram and Graven Maul were released. The new EP from Infernal Coil (Bodies Set in Ashen Death) is AMAZING, but it's a two song 7"...so it just leaves me wanting new material from them.

-February is looking like a good month for metal releases - Genocide Pact, Wake (top 5 rec in 2016 for me), Harm's Way, Visigoth, Windhand/Satan Satyr's split, and what ever other awesome sounding stuff is mentioned in this thread and Reddit.

    Addendum to my previous post:

Wolftooth from Indiana. Upbeat stoner doom that sounds like a sobered-up Ozzy fronting early The Sword. This MIGHT be my favorite record upon first listen so far this year. Hot damn.
