there's good stuff going on in the final third of this but it took me like, forty minutes to get here, i'm tired

I really, really like this; it's different from 20/20, which I really appreciate.

Overall, I like this. There are some really interesting instrumentals going on here, but some of the lyrics are all time cheesy. Gonna give it a few more spins for sure though.

Could really do without "Livin' Off the Land" though

    it's v dull

  10. "Flannel" is exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't be lmao

    I almost can't be mad. I should've expected this

  11. this is easy listening. i've heard much worse. but the corniness is next-level and the fact that "supplies" sounds like a standout in context says something

Yes, this is thoroughly okay. I don't have very strong thoughts about it either way after my first listen, other than that I love "The Hard Stuff" and hate "Wave."

the "livin' off the land" chorus feels oddly weighted. it's also not very good

i did lol when jt rhymed "breeze off the pond" with "trees on the lawn"

"the hard stuff" is good though, yeah, it feels like the only moment on the album where jt really tries to do a "country" song and it works. sorta serves the same purpose as "not a bad thing" does on 20/20 pt 2

My hottest take on this is that I wish he had actually made a country album instead of sort of teasing one.

agreed, but that's based on me thinking "sauce" and "hard stuff" are the strongest songs here

not that "sauce" is county but it's the most interesting version of a kind of hybridized sound on the album

i misread that as "the wackness of 'wave'" which i think is more correct

haha if they just made it shorter I'd kind of like it

Honestly I like almost all of this. The lyrics are definitely cheesy, but musically I think it's on par with his past albums. The overall "roots" influences are used in a way that mostly works for me, and it still feels like a JT album.

So i've probably listened 3 full times now. A few thoughts:

    1. This album is definitely out there. I wouldn't say Filthy, Supplies or Say Something are indicative of what the rest of the album sounds like.
    2. There are some real high and low points. Some things make me go "whoa" and others make me go "yuck".
    3. I can hear the "Americana with 808's". The Neptunes/Pharrell are definitely all over this album and I kind of just wish I had more of the Timbaland/JT duo.
    4. I mostly like it but can already see this getting absolutely destroyed by mainstream media.
