I fear you may be over estimating how much the quality of the music plays into reviews at places like Pitchfork.

Yep. I feel like the Say Something review in particular barely even touches on the actual song... and I don't even think the lyrics mean what they seem convinced they mean.

Beyond that, all three track reviews so far have been weirdly smug and dismissive even by Pitchfork standards. I feel like they'll be in the minority in likely panning the album in their review, I saw plenty of positive reviews of Filthy when that dropped and EW just gave the album a B:

The new song is brilliant, particularly when Chris Stapleton and all the instrumentation kicks in. Loved it.

No. I’m saying the new JT songs are bad. Hence, bad reviews.

Probably like 90% of the critiques I've seen of JT since this album rollout began have next to nothing to do with the music itself... lots of focus on the music videos and overall "theme" of the album, and whether or not the songs so far fit with an album titled Man of the Woods. I think the rollout will likely make more sense when we've heard the whole album, but even if it doesn't, the focus has been disproportionately on things other than the quality of the music.

Anyone who's been a fan of JT's past work not liking Say Something at all kind of baffles me tbh, I think it's very much fitting with his ballads from past albums, with a slight country tinge to it but far from a huge departure. That song has gotten a much less polarized reception than the first two so far, and I think at the end of the day the VAST majority of music listeners don't give a single fuck about the album rollout or "narrative" surrounding it... if the song's good, it'll be a hit.

I have in prior posts. Directionless. Rudderless. I find them to be flat in areas in which pop music is supposed to thrive.

Outside of that you should never have to truly explain why you like or don’t like something. I can generally turn something on, listen and go “I’m not feeling this at all, it’s bad”. I don’t need to supply a detailed response for why I think something is bad or good. It’s just what you feel or don’t. Sometimes I can pinpoint the exact reason. Sometimes the music just sucks and misses the mark. I’m not a music critic, I don’t write detailed reviews for a living. I listen to music because it’s something I enjoy.

This is what happened to Arcade Fire, yet I enjoy Everything Now.

These songs, so far biggest disappointment of the year. Haven’t paid really any attention to the rollout.

Filthy makes me feel some kind of way. And it's weird.
I need to listen to supplies a couple more times to form an opinion. But I enjoy the less conventional song structures, the bluesy influence, and Justin sounds great here. I don't listen to a whole lot of pop music so I can't really comment on how these songs rank as pop songs. But nothing has stood out to me as terrible.

I am honestly surprised at how much I dislike Supplies. I honestly find it to be atrociously, Nickelback-level bad. I am not the world's biggest JT fan by any means but I've always been a fan of his stuff going back to when N'Sync was big when I was in high school. I don't spend a lot of time listening all the way through his albums but he always has a bunch of songs a like a whole lot on every one he puts out. I can't remember disliking something of his this much.

Just revisited Filthy for the first time in a while. I really wish all the choruses were like the final chorus. Right when the song finally hooks me its over.

Say Something is definitely my favorite of the three.

I don't know man, it seems weird to me that in 2018 this is the album they're holding up as a beacon for originality because it was produced by The Neptunes.

You can't really trash Neptunes or Pharrell for lack of originality after the most recent N.E.R.D album
