As Pfaff argues, and as the raw data makes clear, the obsessive focus on drug offenders specifically and non-violent offenders obscures the reality we have to deal with: any successful wide-scale effort to reduce our prison population necessarily involves reducing the numbers jailed for violent crimes. That opinion is shared by Marie Gottschalk, author of the recent book Caught: The Prison State and the Lockdown of American Politics. Gottschalk points out that the typical focus on the “non, non, nons” — nonviolent, nonserious, nonsexual offenders — amounts to trying to solve a problem by focusing where there is none. Such offenders are already very unlikely to be imprisoned in the first place. And despite our assumptions, the lines between these different classes of criminal are not at all clear.

The truth of the matter is that confronting our carceral state will necessarily mean less prosecution and less severe punishments for people who are accused of violent crimes. To end mass incarceration, we of necessity must become less willing to send people to jail for violent crime. That includes crimes that many progressives now treat as unforgivable sins, sexual assault and domestic violence. There is no road to dramatically reducing our prison population that does not entail reduced sentences, fewer prosecutions, and more parole for people who have done very bad things.

If he thinks he can win a statewide election I don't know why he wouldn't go for the senate seat. Unless he truly has no presidential ambitions and would rather spend his time as AG in a state doing criminal justice reform type stuff. Or hopes to go AG----->Gov----->Wherever from there.

  9. AG actually seems fitting for him. I think he has the potential to be a major player nationally for democrats, but I'd gladly vote for him as AG.

Most immigrants who came here legally don't care about those who came illegally and are likely to socialzie with them.

For those opportunistic few or stupid enough to fall for such a divisional tactic, they can fuck themselves.

many latinx immigrants who came here legally and love their proximity to whiteness absolutely refuse to relate with "illegals" and actually hate them because they think it ruins their street cred in relation to white supremacy.

Yep my family and relatives are like that.

Western centrism is a disease. Everything revolves around it and the white supremacy relating to it. Would love for that way of thinking to be globally deconstructed and decimated.

Someone here awhile back mentioned the same things towards East Asian-Americans (particularly women) who prefer to identify with white culture (feel free for anyone to correct me).

Yessir. Quite a few. Cubans are absolutely the worst about "legal" immigration considering a big chunk of the immigrant population of Cuba to Miami came technically illegally and resolved the issue with the whole Wet Foot, Dry Foot thing
