I've read and heard a few critiques of Trump's foreign policy that amount to "dumbass, shut up so we can keep doing evil shit. Pakistan won't let us launch drones if we cut off aid" . Have they considered not doing evil shit in the first place?

  7. It's also worth noting that, returning to the news of the US staying in Syria indefinitely, the position Clinton held, by all indicators, was "harder" on Syria than even what Trump has actually done since in office, and included the establishment of a no fly zone which would have necessitated the shooting down of Syrian and Russian planes. This would have been a major escalation that has, perhaps miraculously or perhaps by virtue of Trump's sucking up to Putin, been avoided thus far. So, given their candidate's position on such, I have no faith that the #resistance is simply too busy with other issues to oppose the occupation of Syria.

Pedant mode : democracy technically has never worked outside of Athens. /pedant mode.

Even if your thesis is correct, much of the "evil" acts america performs have had no actual benefit for America and frequently backfire. Droning in the middle east, for example, seems like a really shitty policy considering the amount of civilian casualties for every actual member of ISIS or All Qaeda hit. Puppet governments in SA have generally collapsed into totalitarian enemies.

Actually, I'm not sure what specifically you're arguing : that America can only exist as a democracy if they do evil shit, or that democracies in general only exist because america does evil shit?

  15. I don’t think it’s related that much to the tax bill, but that plays a role. It’s been growing rapidly for a few years now. And I also think we’re primed for a recession. I’m preparing for that eventuality right now ... I dunno about a crash as much as some sectors seeing pullbacks.

"Wolf’s answer to the failures of privatisation and outsourcing is to “reform the structure and purposes of regulation”. As if regulation ever worked; indeed, current thought among government elites and big business is that economies need to loosen up regulation again in order to get things going. To quote Wolf himself from his book on the lessons of the banking crash: “notwithstanding all the regulatory reforms, the system is bound to fail again,”

Public ownership is not of “totemic significance” to the left, as Wolf harps. It is based on clear evidence that delivering services that people need is best done within a plan and not based on the level of profitability for the likes of Carillion. Yes, public ownership and state companies that become just milk cows for the profits of the private sector without any democratic control are not what we require. But democratically run public companies as part of a plan for production for need are not “a dead end”, but the future."

  18. The anger isn’t at them being mad at the foreign policy. It’s at turning a focused push on a domestic policy issue into something it’s not. You can be upset with an issue not getting as much attention right now as you want it to, and understand why. And know, unless you’re being a bad faith actor, that this doesn’t equate to the conclusion offered in the original tweet.

We’ve seen how hard it is to get the media and people to care about any singular issue in the Trump era. It takes this kind of messaging and discipline from activists and politicians alike to make it happen.

  20. It absolutely shows they care about more than just American lives.

There have been amnesty bills written before. Lots of support. If they get enough seats, yes I think they will.

Polling says they’re against those things now.

"By spring the public outcry against Kalanick was coming in loud and clear on the company’s surveys. On a question asking respondents what they thought of specific business leaders, he ranked dead last among tech CEOs and only slightly above the CEOs of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. Employee morale was falling along with the CEO’s reputation. “Until 2017, you could go into Uber on any given day and half the T-shirts were Uber T-shirts,” says one executive. “They disappeared overnight. People didn’t want to wear Uber stuff.”

Given that there is “no mechanism in American law for a new election,” nor “a mechanism for correcting the criminal results of the previous election,” Ryan ought to nominate “the person defeated by the treason of his own party, and then step aside, and let her become President,” Lessig went on to say

Lol what planet do you live on where you think Ryan doing this is even within the realm of possibility

  23. Shrinking and changing the definition is what I consider the evasion. One day it’s activist groups. One day only certain ones. One day only the politicians. Then celebrities. Then personalities. To deny the wide swath that makes up the resistance and call it bullshit while everyone from regular people to ADAPT activists to famous people are engaged, and part of it, in a way never before seen in my life — I think is silly. And to call that bullshit, in the face of quite a few victories, and a current huge battle ... is ignorance looking for internet kudos and not based in reality.

  24. There are lots of polls that say it’s much more complicated than that.

    NPR Foreign Policy Topline 2017 05 17
“Less than a quarter said the country's foreign policy should look out for Americans, even if it harms people in other countries.”

Democratic responses for years now are trending in this direction, one without an “America first” bent.
