I think this album deserves its own album thread. Been spinning this album a lot, and I can't be the only one. Refreshing rock/pop-punk sound. Also, I think a couple of the guys in the band are forum regulars on here.

I get a new favorite with every spin. Right now it's Comic Sans.

Thank you all for the very kind words, very flattering. Crazy that something we recorded in our basement is being received as well as it has. As for the Comic Sans thing, it was titled that to troll typography snobs and I think it worked. Next time maybe we'll call one Papyrus lol

I would love to get some insight into how you guys recorded this in your basement (it sounds great), I've been trying to figure out the best way to record my band for a while now. But you may have chronicled that in another thread/somewhere else?

there's a home recording thread in this very board where you can ask our resident engineers for advice :) you'd be surprised how easy it is.

Nothing overly crazy really. Drums we're a Whitney Nesting Penguin kit with a 20" kick that just sounds perfect right out of the gate with almost nothing on it. Here's what I used for drums and their signal chain

    Kick In - Audix D6 - Vintech 573 - API 560 - DAW
Kick Out - Solomon LoFreq (think like a Yamaha Subkick kinda thing) - Vintech 573 - API 550A - DAW
    Snare T - SM57 - Rupert Neve Designs 5042 - Elysia Xfilter - DAW
    Snare B - SM57 - Rupert Neve Designs 5042 - DAW
    Tom1 - Sennheiser MD421 - Antelope Zen - DAW
    Tom 2 - ""
    Overheads - Josephson C42 - API 312 - DAW
    Rooms - Lauten 220A - Antelope Zen - Distressor - DAW
    HH - SM7 - Antelope Zen - DAW

Probably spent two or three days cutting drums for it, kits tuned fairly high relative to other bands I'm working with right now. We took a lot of different drum samples from this setup and used them a bunch on it.

Bass - American Fender Jazz - DI - DAW
Was going to reamp this but ended up liking the sound I had built in amplitube, at mix it was sent to an aux with the DI and compressed with a blackface 1176 and that's more or less it.

GTRS - Ben Nystrum Custom Shop 72' Telecaster w/ Evertune Mod - DI - DAW
key here is the Evertune, we saved a lot of time with that. My parts were reamped through my Mesa Dual Rec, Jorb's we're reamped through his 68 Fender Deluxe Reissue. Both those we're mic'd with an SM57 and 421 into the Vintech 573s and summed on the way in to a single track. Some DI's we put plugins on for certain time based effects (the tremolo in Comic Sans, the delay in the bridge of "my dream" for example).

    Vocals - Lauten 220A - Vintech 573 - DAW
Use to own a bunch of Neumann's and other expensive stuff but I've been going with a pair of these for a while and for a fraction of the price of the cheapest, shittiest sounding Neumann you get a pretty nice sounding mic. Vocals we're primarily done in triplicate (one center, one hard left, one hard right for choruses) but some low register stuff in Worth and My Dream is four takes synced up to create that sound.

    MIX STUFF
Bus Comp - SSL Master Bus Comp
There's no automation anywhere on any of the mixes, I put a lot of effort in building arrangements in a way that I'm not a slave to my slow reaction time with faders. I do remember running out of some processing power cause my computer is getting a little old to be doing some demanding tasks but very very simple mix otherwise. SSL Channel on everything and the CLA classic comps from waves on vocals. This album was mixed in the box and that's nice cause it's easy to recall. Lately I've been mixing on hardware but that has it's own drawbacks for sure

You can read more about my work at JORDAN VOTH and by all means feel free to contact me I love talking about this kind of stuff.

    Cheers!
