r/metal's Top 10 of 2017. Good mix of stuff I'm familiar with and stuff to check into. The Malokarpatan album that is their top release is pretty gnarly.

 

I was actually gonna post this haha. You know what's crazy? Power Trip isn't even on that list. It was #1 Q1, #2 Q2, and #5 Q3. It's like everyone decided to not vote for it at all or something.

Methinks they're not including it in their overall list because Shreddit is too cool for school. At least ~40 mentions of it through a CTRL-F search. What grinds my gears a bit is that they'll mention a mediocre Mastodon album over Power Trip, but I digress.

I don't care though because we all know Power Trip is top 5 in our hearts...at least mine. :)

So Decapitated's rape charges were dropped against them? I find it kinda fishy that they had refused to given DNA tests (at least some of the members) but ya know, this will probably fuck their career up, These allegations aren't to be taken lightly and people harassed Michael Jackson about them until the day he died.

 

Maybe it's just me, but I generally don't care a lot about their career at this point. People celebrating a band getting rape charges against them dropped by slut-shaming and denigrating the accuser has really left a bad taste in mouth towards a lot of metal fans at this point. The charges also being dropped based on the accuser withdrawing them as opposed to there being a lack of evidence also leads me to believe something nefarious and sexually violent that the accuser didn't want went down on that tour bus.

Also a minor, irrelevant contributing factor for me personally: Decapitated hasn't put out a good album since Witek died, IMO, after a quick revisit to their discography last year before these charges got filed. But that's just my opinion, man...

 

Somebody must be enjoying Tomb Mold out there because they supposedly have another new album coming out this year on 20 Buck Spin, which is a pretty big step up from the small Canadian labels they were on before. They're also playing Migration Fest in Pittsburgh next summer which likely means another tour. Hopefully they won't play another house show when they come through here again if that happens.

It's a very different sound since his passing, I enjoyed it for it being decapitated but it pales in comparison, you're totally right.

And I mean, I'd have to stop listening to any metal whatsoever if I based it on fanbase. Mouth breathing slut shamers on one end, 40 year old holier than thous on the other. If you dislike bands for their politics views actions or anything other than their music, that's totally ok.

Like...I still enjoy old as I lay dying for the nostalgia, doesn't mean I'm a wife hating psycho. But I'm not judging folks who wanna stop listening, yanno?

 

Their newer groove heavy sound just didn't do anything for me compared to their previous output. I mean, I know it's a subjective thing, but this case made me feel a bit more justified in dropping them from my rotation regardless of the legal outcome. There's infinitely better death metal output not made by guys who have a sketchy history when it comes to sexual violence.

But I disagree with your critique of the scene as a whole. Every rock scene (at least the ones I'm readily familiar with) has had some degree of involvement from varying amounts of individuals who are shitty people, but I've met a lot of good people in metal and hardcore, both fans and musicians. In general, I don't write off people until they do something shitty to prove me otherwise. Obviously there have been people who break that trust I put in them...but that's getting a bit more personal than I'd like in this response. Hopefully you catch my drift through.

You should probably stop listening to As I Lay Dying because it's As I Lay Dying. :) Just food for thought.

Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, but Power Trip did show up on the final Shreddit rankings after all the votes were processed. Came in at 7th place.

Is there any thrash metal influence in this series at all? I haven't kept up with Adult Swim since college so I have no idea what any of this means other than the fact Municipal Waste is coming to town in March.
