There is so much about BOTW though that has just blown me away. it is just so immersive. The combat in BOTW is the most fun ive ever had in Zelda combat. its so fun that it is so much more than just hitting the sword button over and over. i love how strategic you have to be at times. i love sneaking up on groups of monsters, setting off their bomb barrels, its just so fun haha.
The shrines are so fun too. i hope that concept is something that continues.
before i started BOTW i was worried that the weapons breaking mechanic was going to really bug me, because its such a departure from typical Zelda framework. but i actually love it. i love that it forces you to use tools that are appropriate for different situations. it really makes you think, "okay, i have this strong weapon right now, but lets just hold off using it until i really need it". i will admit, if it were up to me, the master sword wouldnt "lose energy" but i understand why they did it (to promote you to keep using other weapons even after you get the master sword).
i honestly think this is the first Zelda game ever where late game you still need rupees. Like really, most Zelda games you get to a certain point where your rupee count is always maxed out, because there is basically nothing to buy. BOTW is unique in that sense because arrows and stuff dont come from bushes anymore. 80% of my arrows come from me actually having to go buy them. and then you get into buying the special Sheika technology stuff from the researchers, money actually stays important throughout the game.
i love that the further you get into the game, the monsters start getting more powerful. it really makes it so things stay interesting. Right when i thought "okay i can pretty much wreck all these Bokoblins now", the white ones started showing up and bam im not so tough anymore haha.
and when it really comes down to it, this is by far the most beautiful zelda game, ever, visually.

Good insight on these lengthy posts!

I hadn't played a Zelda game since Twilight Princess before I started with BOTW, so I was out of the game for a while and basically came back into Hyrule with a clean slate. Therefore, I didn't really miss the dungeons because I hadn't played any in a decade so I wasn't thinking about it.

Now that I'm playing Link to the Past, I'm really enjoying the dungeon experience and wish that BOTW had provided that as well.

Just the overwhelming beauty of the game covered up a lot of the flaws - dungeons, depth of story, etc. You still won't find me complaining about the overall package. Best Zelda game I've ever played.

One thing i’d like to see expanded in the next game is more towns/NPCs.

wondering what if the next one is a direct sequel; since really, 99% of the royal family are dead, the kingdom of Hyrule is kinda up for grabs in terms of leadership. what if there's some kind of civil war for whom get's anointed the next King of Hyrule
maybe this way you actually get to engage w Zelda as a playable character since she's the only living descendant (that is if they don't go the cheap "got kidnapped by the enemy" route they've been doing

im not sure this is super related to what youre getting at, but something id LOVE to see in a Zelda game is a point in the game where you're actually taking part in a straight up war. like im talking, imagine in the BOTW landscape, hundreds of Goron / Zora / Gerudo / Rito soldiers fighting in Hyrule Field against an army of Moblins and Bokoblins and such. and you have objectives that you need to get done in the battle (like take down 5 Guardians / this big strong guy etc etc... something cooler than that, but you get what im saying) that would be so cool imo.

I’d love a direct sequel but the best part of the game was exploration and I don’t want to be immediately familiar with the map in the next game

I agree that they could have been more different visually, but in terms of mechanics I think it was important that they didn't feel like a different game within BotW. They had to be this open and they had to be designed in a way that they could be solved at any point with your basic toolset, or they would have broken the whole point of the game in my opinion. An old school dungeon would have been so out of place in this game given what it tried to do.

What you're describing here has like 90% overlap with Hyrule Warriors haha

It’s all good. I’m going to start Wind Waker now :) I played about an hour of it but then went to finish the BOTW dlc. Now this can have my full attention

Fuck yeah, love Wind Waker, but I actually never beat it because of that part at the end where you have to sail all over creation looking for shards of a medallion or something. Fuck I need to find my GameCube and play that again. Like a lot of people, I was turned off by the graphics when the game first came out, and being a lot younger I found the sailing aspect was really overwhelming in comparison to the simplicity of Majora’s Mask. When I finally gave the game another chance, I realized I had made a big mistake. It’s up there with this, OoT and MM with the best Zelda titles out there. Although I haven’t played Link To The Past or anything prior to OoT so I know there’s a lot of other contenders too.

Wind Waker is a top 3 Zelda game for me.

can you only obtain the old Hero’s Tunic armor sets through purchasing amiibos?

I have about 96 hours played on this game and still haven’t beaten it, lol. Just got the Hylian shield though so I think I will go ahead and beat the game and finish up my other shrines so I can start on the DLC’s.
