Because it's the Apple users who brought up other OSes in here in the first place.. my post was in direct response to people saying Android manufacturers do something which they do not. As an Apple fan, I feel that I'm fine to be in here, but I don't have to like everything that Apple does :). They make awesome computers and their phones are awesome in quality, but their iOS feels more like training wheels to me in comparison to Android. I'm fine with criticising Android as well, hence why I'll shamelessly trash on LG while also commenting on the few things they do get right. I have a number of complaints about my Samsung phone as well, but I know I also would have as many, if not more, complaints with an iPhone.

    No phone is perfect.

I see the issue as being that they never mentioned explicitly that CPU throttling was at play. That article makes it sound like a nifty battery management trick was flipped on to "even out" the current flowing from the battery, rather than hobbling the phone to make sure it never draws large current. (To be fair, the official Apple statement they quote doesn't truly mislead; it just stays completely silent on what they were actually doing to solve the problem).

Debatable, I guess. Most other phones and laptops don't shut down when their battery indicator says 40% just because of a CPU spike. If they do, it's rightly called out as unacceptable (I know a select few Android phones have received complaints of similar issues in recent years, including the Nexus 6P), and in some cases manufacturers have responded with extended warranties or replacements. In any case, it doesn't seem like this issue is just an inevitable consequence of an electronic device using Li-ion for power.

  3. Who said that? Drew's post specifically says "doesn't" and that's the only one around your post that mentions any other OS in that way. What people said was that Android phones have the same issue with old batteries. They just choose to fail instead of stay on.

With old batteries: yes they do.

Fair enough point. I may have missed that scrolling by and assumed Drew's "doesn't" was a typo, since he said "doesn't as well", and there was no other example of a manufacturer who "doesn't" do this in the post. I thought I had seen similar rumblings scrolling through the pages, but I'm probably nuts and thinking of random people on my Facebook feed/online articles, my bad on that, I apologize.

$30 to keep a four year old phone running for another 12-18 months (and on the most up to date software) seems like a pretty good deal to me.

  7. no way homie Apple is obviously forcing people to buy $1000 phones!!!!

I actually agree with this. Now that they got caught and had to save face, they're handling the aftermath about as well as you could ask for. Just about any sealed-battery phone would become more appealing to me if I knew I could restore it to new after 18 months for $30, labor included.

My four year old phone is running on the latest OS on it's original battery with absolutely no issues. Apple ftw.

each of the last two days my phone drained a percent every 15 seconds pretty immediately after going outside, i hope it's just the cold and not a bigger issue

There's a good chance there won't be batteries in stock for a while since demand is so high. Be prepared to have to get your battery ordered, and then come back for the repair itself.

Just an FYI for anyone that is planning on getting their battery looked at in the near future.

Best purchase I made last year by far. Related; I dropped them in the snow today and they sat outside for an hour before I realized I didn't have them. They still work perfectly!

Most likely the cold since it’s been miserably cold lately.

Has anyone tried scheduling a battery replacement yet with the Genius Bar? Every time I look nothing is available at either Apple store in the area.

I haven't but I'm assuming it's going to be tough to get a battery for a while

Most (if not all) stores will have to order a replacement battery right now due to the high demand. Then you’d have to come back for the repair once you’re contacted - procedure for that may vary between stores.

I wish I could make an appointment even if it’s a month or two off.

Do or do not, there is no try.

It's a small thing, but the amount of Artists without photos on Apple Music drives me nuts. Artist view across devices just looks ugly. If artists don't upload them, I wish you could do it yourself or Apple would. Don't think I've ever seen an artist without a photo on Spotify.
