Started Tokyo Mirage last night. Was gonna hold out a little longer hoping it would come to Switch but I really had an urge to just do it. It’s so fun so far

 

It’s the only reason I still have a Wii U. Really want it ported to Switch.

 

I've very rarely been unreasonable about a game. I think my criticism is mostly valid even if you happen to disagree. For example, even a lot of Nier fans in the games media agree that the gameplay isn't all that good. So, I'm sorry if I make you feel bad, I really am, but if I can't criticize a game, even one that others praise like it's the second coming, I'm not sure why this thread exists.

 

If you're saying that my post is about you criticizing the game in general, then I'm sorry I gave that impression. My point isn't that it can't be criticized, but the manner of belittling people's tastes for enjoying it in the whole "People love this game and it's actually terrible, what idiots" manner that you've given, which is how it's come across to me

 

That game is so much fun. Really well paced, fresh setting and so on. If it comes to Switch I'll replay it.

I really do not understand how either could be considered an awful game

I personally don't feel like I did that, though I do sometimes joke around so maybe sometimes things don't work out like I want them to.

When I commented on the story related game of the year content earlier, what I really mean is that "the video game media" a) is using hyperbole like their lifes depend on it and that's corny and bad criticism, and 2) seems to mostly ignore amazing writing unless it comes with video game ass video games stuff (like Bury Me, My Love as opposed to Wolfenstein, for example).

Maybe it's just that it was really tiring to hear alleged professionals talk about how "cathartic" it is to "fight Nazis in America", praising it's weird alt history story like it's this miralce, all while not even being aware of a game that deals with actual problems refugees go through (with GREAT writing). It's not like Bury Me, My Love flew under the radar or anything, it has gotten quite a lot of press for a mobile game.

In that case maybe it's the fact that I never ever pay attention to video game criticism (I'll pay attention to hype from friends but don't watch/read/listen to critics at all) that caused me to not get the joke haha

So hey, maybe a game can be well made, fun for many... and also kind of awful. If we can't point that out, why have this thread?

Yeah the homophobic parts of Persona 5 are horrendous and are a terrible move by Atlus

It's not new from Japanese games in general. Japan is still quite a homophobic place.

 

Irrelevant. Like I said, cultural relativism is no excuse in general (unless the country in question is poor and/or isolated) and it's certainly no excuse for a AAA video game published around the world by fucking SEGA.

You can look past it - I frequently do - but it's still a problem and shitting on a game because of it is perfectly valid.

 

Yeah like, regardless of cultural relativism, we can still be like "Hey this is not okay" in the same way that we would for anything made in the US or otherwise. It goes back to the whole "But what about hip hop?!?!" argument haha. Homophobia in hip hop can be criticized in the same way as homophobia in rock and roll, as long as one isn't being used as a deflection from the other (which is commonly the case).

And it also doesn't mean "Boycott immediately!" but it does mean that we should do our best to be aware and outspoken against it.

 

Right, and these are pretty glaring problems, so I think it's pretty wild to say that Persona 5 is above criticism or even above being called awful by some people because it does, well, AWFUL stuff.

 

I feel like...it gets complicated when it comes to other cultures, especially when other races than our own are involved. So I understand the hesitance in discussing the homophobia in Japanese culture when so much of it exists in our own culture. Like, I definitely get it, and don't wanna dismiss how complicated it can get. At the same time, I feel like we have to at least do something about our own product consumption and speak out when we have the chance to see positive changes. After the Catherine remake reveal (I never played the original) I'll definitely be putting my money where my mouth is and I hope others do too.

I don't know. I've written and rewritten this post a lot because I don't know how to put into words what I mean.

Side note: Reading the headline "Persona 5 Put Me Back In The Closet" broke my heart.

 

After 8 hours of Destiny 2, I am quite pleased with it. This is what Destiny should have been.

 

Does anyone have any recs for like "mindless games"? Haha like stuff that's not extremely plot heavy+also isn't a sports game because I play those way too much?

I got Project Diva Future Tone for the purpose of being a relaxing mindless game and realized that it's way too hard to ever be that (although I do like it)

 

this is kinda sports but trackmania turbo is mindless fun

I'll try out Destiny, I keep hearing a lot about it (and it DID appear on my dashboard without permission hahaha) and I know a lot of friends do play it so I'll give it a shot on my PS4, thanks!

Stardew Valley and Assassin's Creed Origins will definitely be Xbox One pickups since I need more games for it desperately. Currently just have Halo MCE and Hexic HD

 

I feel like they try to make it so ridiculous that you won't think about it, and then once you do, it hits you how gross it is
