    Here's my write-up for the third and final album that @WolvesAreCircling182 assigned to me for this bonus session.

    Starset
    Vessels
    2017

    [IMG]

    The first exposure I had to Starset was during session 3 here when I was paired with @WolvesAreCircling182 for the first time and he assigned me Starset's debut album Transmissions. I enjoyed it and planned on checking out their follow-up album Vessels, but I hadn't gotten around to it prior to this bonus session.

    I put this album off until the end of this session because it was so long (about 70 minutes) compared to the other two albums that I was assigned (each about 40 minutes long), but it really doesn't seem like that long of a listen. The first track on Vessels is an intro track that's about a minute long, but the following 14 tracks are all songs that typically are somewhere in the 4:30-5:30 range. Like Transmissions, Vessels has a lot of instrumental interludes at the end of most tracks and this makes the album feel like one 70 minute long song instead of 15 separate tracks. It really makes for an enjoyable listening experience and it's obvious that the band wants their audience to digest this album (and their debut album as well) in one sitting. These songs work fine on their own, but I would highly recommend that one listen to this album in full for their first listen.

    Anyway, I was a fan of Transmissions and I was interested to see how their follow-up would stack up for me. I have to say that I like Vessels even more. I think that Starset refined their sound and it seems that everything is just bigger on this album. The choruses are catchier, the heavy tracks are heavier, the whole album just sounds huge. Vocally, I can hear similarities to Thirty Seconds To Mars, Breaking Benjamin, and Skillet. Several of the songs on Vessels are more aggressive vocally than the bands that I just mentioned though. Musically, the songs are loud and driving. Lyrically, Transmissions seemed to focus a lot on a space/sci-fi theme, but there didn't seem to be as much of a focus on that theme on this album.

    A lot of the tracks on this album have really catchy choruses (Satellite and Ricochet, to name a couple) while others are pretty heavy and feature some screaming (Frequency stands out here). And then there are some tracks, such as Into The Unknown, that provide a good balance of heavy and catchy. Some of the choruses on this album are so catchy (and poppy, to an extent) that they don't leave your head. The vocal melody of Ricochet's chorus sounds so familiar to me, but I just can't place it. I honestly could see this being a chorus in a Rihanna song (please don't take that as an insult @WolvesAreCircling182 because it's not meant to be!).

    There are also some songs on this album that just sound massive (I feel like the word epic is overused, but these songs could probably be described as epic also) such as Back To The Earth and the album's closing track, Everglow.

    All in all, this was a very enjoyable listen and a fresh take on the hard rock/modern rock/radio rock/alternative genre. I'd imagine that these songs would translate really well in a live setting. They are coming to Cleveland in early February and I am going to try to get there to see some of these songs in person.

    The entire album was very solid but the standout tracks to me so far are Satellite, Frequency, Ricochet, Into The Unknown, Last To Fall, Bringing It Down, and Everglow.

    Thank you to @WolvesAreCircling182 for the solid recommendations!

    I'd say my top 2 (right now) are probably Frequency and Ricochet. I know I listed a lot of standout tracks in my write-up but I really enjoyed the album and it was hard to leave any out! I know Monster was their big hit off of Vessels and I enjoyed that one quite a bit too, but it didn't stand out to me more than some of the other tracks.

    Everglow was a solid track for the first 3 and a half or 4 minutes but the stretch from about 4 minutes through 6 minutes put it over the top for me.

    Everglow is pretty awesome. I like every song too of course. Idk why but I may call Die For You my favorite, Maybe because of the lyrics

    @angrycandy

    Finally checked out Neil Young - Comes a Time

    You seriously killed it with the recommendations for me haha This was seriously very good, and not something I originally thought I would be into. I'm very glad I listened to both these albums when I first woke up in the morning, sitting in the kitchen with coffee looking out at the snow. This album especially was just so incredibly peaceful and made me reflect a ton. It's so hard to pick a favorite song from it, because it literally felt more like a book then an album to me, it definitely is the sum of all it's parts as opposed to being one or two songs that I would go back to individually. I'm pretty bad at reviewing these recommendations, but just know I really enjoyed them both and will be revisiting them a ton in the future. I actually nearly picked up Grace yesterday at the record store.
